Like a lot of neurodivergent people, Geek Girl author Holly Smale has an incredibly ‘spiky’ brain profile. She says: “In some areas, I’m technically a genius, and in others, I can’t do tasks that a four-year-old would easily manage.” She has memories of being two years old, but can’t r...

Tummy Time 👶

Tummy time is something we as therapists recommend on a daily basis for a baby’s development.
This is also true for older children when we recommend prone work I.e completing activities in the prone position.
There are so many benefits to a baby and child’s development by completing tummy time/prone activities. Here are just a few:
-Promotes the development of the core, neck and back muscles.
-Helps the baby meet their motor milestones
-Can help prevent early motor delays
-Promotes Sensory Development

⭐️Tummy time should be completed several times a day. You may want to start with 1-2 minutes at a time and then gradually build this up.

❌Remember to always speak to your baby’s health nurse/GP if you have any concerns or queries.

First ➡️Then Visuals 👀

This is a strategy that we recommend regularly for children who have difficulties maintaining focus and attention for table top activities- schoolwork, homework 📚

The child can see what is expected of them ‘first’ and what they can do ‘then’ (after the first activity is completed). Please ensure the ‘then’
activity is motivating for the child.

It is important to set a timer for each of the first and then activities.⏱(the amount of time at each depends on the child, however it may be good to start with 4-5minutes at the ‘first’ activity and 4-5 minutes at the ‘then’ activity)

This strategy really helps children stay on task.

Pre-writing skills: 🖍

Prewriting skills are the fundamental skills children need to develop before they are able to write. These skills contribute to the child's ability to hold and use a pencil, and the ability to draw, write, copy, and colour.

A major component of pre-writing skills are the pre-writing shapes. These are the pencil strokes that most letters, numbers and early drawings are comprised of. They are typically mastered in sequential order, and to an age specific level.

Swipe over to see the age specific shapes and some ideas on how to develop these skills ✏️🟡🟪🔺

Fine Motor Skills ✏️

We use our hands hundreds of times a day to help us complete the majority of our activities of daily living. More than 2 in 10 children struggle with their fine motor skills.

What do fine motor skill difficulties look like?
-Does your child struggle with prewriting/handwriting skills, do they have an immature pencil grasp?
-Can your child use scissors to cut out simple shapes?
-Maybe they struggle to use their hands to perform everyday tasks like opening a bottle or packet or struggle to pick up items?
-Can your child zip up their coat?

As a child gets older they may struggle to keep up with their peers during handwriting tasks, especially as they enter secondary school, early intervention is key to help support a child’s development in their early years.

At Leap OT we can assess your child’s fine motor skills and give your specific recommendations and advice on how to develop these.
