Hey everyone,
On Sunday 6th September I am climbing Slieve Donard (highest mountain in Ulster) to raise funds to help Chrissy Mc Gonnell get to Russia for much needed medical treatment. Please donate what you can so Chrissy can win his battle with MS and climb these mountains himself ⛰

Dates have been used around the world for centuries as a natural approach to preparation for labor. Several studies now support their effectiveness. Though we don’t know exactly why, they do have an impact on the start and progress of labor - likely due to an impact on the hormone oxytocin which helps labor start and progress effectively.

A 2011 study found that women who ate dates starting at 36 weeks were:
🔸 Significantly more dilated when they got to the hospital
🔸 Had a significantly higher rate of intact membranes
🔸 Were significantly more likely to go into labor spontaneously (i.e. without induction)
🔸 And had nearly half the length of first stage of labor

A 2014 study found that women who ate dates from 37 weeks on had:
🔸 Greater cervical dilatation at admission
🔸 Higher success rates of labor induction when needed

A 2017 study concluded that all the above was accurate and yet another study found that eating dates in pregnancy led to less bleeding immediately after birth.

Any type of dates work! The ‘dose’ is about 2.5 ounces of dates ( ~6 to 8 small dates or ~4 larger dates) daily, starting at 36 or 37 weeks and until labor begins. I love eating them plain, but you can include them in my “herbal bliss bites” (recipe on my IGTV), use them to sweeten cashew or almond milk, or include them chopped in yogurt or oatmeal. Amazingly, they also haven’t been shown to be a problem for blood sugar.

Did you use dates to prep for your labor? Do you know a pregnant mama who is prepping for labor? Tag her in the comments below so she can learn about the power of this ancient medicine!

Missed last nights Instagram Live? Here’s briefly what I covered with Aine from about hair & scalp health

🍃Postpartum hair loss - most likely linked to low blood levels/low iron. After growing a baby it’s important to replenish your stores. Eat blood nourishing foods, better still if your a new mom get someone else to do it for you! If your not vegetarian/vegan then Bone broths, red meat especially lambs liver, eggs. Also green veg/plants, beetroot, apricots etc

🍃Alopecia - can be due to high stress, thyroid/hormonal imbalance, low Vit D, poor/low protein intake, blood deficiency

🍃menopausal - hormonal shift causing raised temp & dryness. Caution with food & drinks that cause more dryness eg Excess alcohol, caffeine, dried baked goods. Caution with spicy food. Include omega rich food such as Oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocado

🍃Dermatitis - think strength if the immune system so maybe zinc (fish meat eggs pumpkin seeds etc, , Vit C(fruit&veg), VitA beta carotene (orange coloured veg) probiotic & fermented foods, omegas (fish nuts seeds) Vit D

🍃Psoriasis - Vit D, Omega foods, Vit A, Pro&prebiotics, reduce stress, possible food intolerances such as Wheat gluten, detox liver & gut

🍃Dandruff - possible candida so reduce sugar, yeast and include probiotics 🍃Biotin =Vitamin B7. Take in a B-Complex if high stress otherwise as part of hair skin nails formula rather than on its own. Rich sources are eggs & wholegrains

🍃Gingers.. increase your zinc rich foods

🍃no one size fits all!

Harvesting hyssop leaves today, soon the flowers will be ready too and they will also be dried for teas. Hyssop makes a lovely fragrant herbal tea and is great for the respiratory system. The Romans were believed to have used hyssop during the times of the plague and it was traditionally used to ward off infections and enhance immunity. In herbal medicine hyssop is used to help to clear congestion; it also is a good digestive herb when it comes to bloating, indigestion, gas. As an antispasmodic hyssop helps spasmodic coughs and stomach cramps. As if that were not good enough reason to grow hyssop, it is also a gentle nervine herb - a nice herb to use for anxiety. Hyssop belongs to the mint family and is easy to grow, although we do grow ours in the polytunnel as it seems to prefer that environment and rewards us with an abundance of flowers and leaves every year. We make a home-grown herbal tea which our daughter sells in her shop, it is hugely popular with her customers and hyssop is just one of the many special ingredients in the tea.
