Typically, people that come to me for help with neck or back pain fall into two categories:
The person has been in pain since a trauma or over exertion within the last 6 months. Scans , medical reports and other diagnoses may point to bulging or herniated discs, trapped nerves, spasm of muscles, bursitis, myofascial pain syndrome or compartment syndrome. There may be pain radiating down the arm or leg, sometimes numbness or pins and needles.
The second category is a person that has been suffering for a longer time, sometimes years of dealing with the dragging, achy soreness that occasionally flares up with sharp, crippling pain. Again, numbness, loss of motor control and pins and needles may also occur.
As acupuncturists, we have etched deep in the brain, a system of channels over the body. These channels follow nerves, blood vessels, the lymph system, muscle groups and are simply another lens to look at the body through.
To take a simple view of it - pain occurs when one of these channels gets blocked - just like pressure building up behind a dam. We use acupuncture to release these blockages and restore the normal flow in the channel. Numbness occurs when the flow is too low in a part of the channel - just like the mouth of a river when the tide is out. Here we are using acupuncture to increase the flow.
The majority of my patients report feeling much better, (often saying things like the pain is 70% less) within the first two weeks of treatment. And with the right treatment plan in place, patients usually find themselves living practically pain free within a couple of short months.

What is acupuncture treatment for back pain and sciatica like?
Depending on which points we use, the patient will either lie down on a large massage table or sit in a reclining armchair. It’s a great idea for patients to wear a loose vest top and bring loose trousers or shorts so that they can remain fully clothed for the treatment. Of course, we have plenty of blankets if needed.
The treatments themselves are aimed at soothing and retraining the nervous system, rebalancing the body and reducing muscle and fascia tensions - all of which allows the body to begin healing itself. We achieve this by using very thin, fine needles at specific points on the body. There can sometimes be a slight pinch when the needles are inserted, but I make sure to remind all my patients that the treatment is not supposed to hurt and to let me know if anything is uncomfortable so I can tweak anything needed.
With everything in place, the patient is allowed to relax for between 20 and 45 minutes - depending on the diagnosis.
Alternatively, to learn more or to arrange a consultation message me, call/WhatsApp me on 086 405 9898 or email rory@roryryanacupuncture.ie

A new study from this september by the (American) National Institute of Health with 800 participants aged 65 and over. Participants were not restricted from using their normal medical care for back pain. Those receiving acupuncture had 15 treatments over 3 months, and half of them continued maintenance treatments of 6 treatments over the 4th to 6th month. At both the 6 and 12 month assessments, those receiving acupuncture had less pain and more mobility than those who did not have any acupuncture. The acupuncture groups also reported less anxiety.
So these results show once again that acupuncture works for chronic back pain.

The first time most people end up coming for acupuncture is when there is something wrong and they have tried medication, physio, surgery, rest and everything else but nothing has given the results needed.
Seeing the transformation from beaten down from physical, emotional or mental pain to walking with a spring in the step in a few weeks with new patients is one of the things I love most about being an acupuncturist.
But the real power of acupuncture is actually in helping keep the body healthy…
For most of us, there is a predisposition to one element being a little weaker, or excessive. For some, it's the Kidney water element where back pain and sore knees can flare up if unattended. Other people with a tendency towards low lung qi are more prone to colds, flu, sinus and hayfever. Of course acupuncture can help when the balance tips too far, but the real trick is using regular acupuncture treatments to keep the elements balanced. After all, a balanced body is a healthy body.
Call 0864059898 or visit www.roryryanacupucnture.ie today to arrange a tune up treatment, it's great for the body, mind and soul.

Late Summer, the season of the earth element is about nourishment, stability and support. Self care now will help boost the body's Immunity for the seasons ahead…
The Spleen and Stomach are the organs of the season, so how and what we eat is important. We should eat slowly, avoid overeating and avoid eating late at night.
Aim for seasonal foods, ideally steamed or lightly stewed that are easy to digest, bolster the Spleens functions.
Yellow and orange vegetables - the colour of the season… Sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, and pumpkins.
Whole grains, Brown rice, millet, and oats.
Legumes: Lentils, chickpeas, and mung beans.
Fruits: Pears, apples, and peaches
These foods can be combined with warming herbs and spices that nourish the earth element: Cinnamon, Ginger, Garlic, Tumeric
Acupuncture, acupressure and self massage treatments at this time will also have a focus on supporting the earth element. We support nourishment now so that we can build the body's resistance to seasonal illnesses in the colder autumn and winter months.
Feel free to get in touch with me on 0864059898 or rory@roryryanacupuncture.ie for more information or to book an appointment.

Having worked in construction for years, Rory has experienced firsthand the devastating effects of injury. From rolling out of bed in the morning with lower back pain, neck pain to cutting fingers with a table saw, he has had his fair share of injury. Having always had an interest in complimentary medicine he sought a way of supporting natural healing and dealing with pain. He found it in Chinese Medicine.
His realisation that he could make a real difference in people’s lives ultimately led to his specialising in acupuncture. He trained in the Shanghai Acupuncture College of Ireland and completed his clinical practice under guidance of Dr. SU Pin Chen (College Director). He furthered his skill set to include Cosmetic Acupuncture, Sports Injury, Pregnancy Care, Sciatica, Pain Management, Depression and more
Wellness is a passion for Rory. His desire to help comes from the fact that he doesn’t like seeing people suffering and believes he can help make people’s lives better.
During his partner’s pregnancy, he helped his son turn from breech to normal position at 38 weeks. After severing two fingers in 2013, he used acupuncture and moxibustion to help with pain and mobilise the reattached digits.
Rory is always happy to talk to people about how life can be made better. Feel free to contact him on 086-4059898 or at rory@roryryaacupuncture.ie
