If you don’t stay hydrated, your physical performance can suffer. ⬇️

This is particularly important during intense exercise or high heat.

Dehydration can have a noticeable effect if you lose as little as 2% of your body’s water content. However, it isn’t uncommon for athletes to lose as much as 6–10% of their water weight via sweat. πŸ’¦

This can lead to altered body temperature control, reduced motivation, and increased fatigue. It can also make exercise feel much more difficult, both physically and mentally.

Optimal hydration has been shown to prevent this from happening, and it may even reduce the oxidative stress that occurs during high intensity exercise. This isn’t surprising when you consider that muscle is about 80% water.

If you exercise intensely and tend to sweat, staying hydrated can help you perform at your absolute best.

The way that you do a cool down often depends on the type of exercise you did during your workout. Most cool downs last 3–10 minutes and include slower, gentle movements and stretching exercises. πŸ“‰

For example, to cool down after jogging you might do a brisk walk for 2–3 minutes, then gradually taper your pace to a stroll. At the end of your walk, you can do standing stretches to increase the range of motion in the leg muscles you just worked. πŸƒπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

If your workout included more strength training, your cool down might include total body stretches to increase the range of motion in the joints you just worked. You'll want to be especially careful to stretch the joints that you just worked. So if you did biceps and triceps strengthening exercises, your cool down might include bicep and tricep stretches. πŸ’ͺ

It is also helpful to include relaxation exercises in your cool down. This might include a few minutes of deep breathing. These mind-body exercises, along with gentle movements and stretching will help you to take advantage of your cool down and keep your body healthy.

29/10/2021

Today 29th October is annual World Stroke Day which is held annually to raise awareness of stroke signs and symptoms and the importance of acting FAST. Remember cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Ireland so its important to know how to recognise a stroke and what to do.

FAST:
F = Facial drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Has the mouth or eye drooped? Ask the person to smile. Is the person's smile uneven?

A = Arm weakness: Is one arm weaker or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech difficulty: Can the person speak clearly or understand what you're saying? Ask the person to repeat a sentence back to you.

T = Time to call: Call the emergency services number in Ireland on 112 or 999 if you spot any of these signs. Time is huge with a stroke, minutes matter so the faster you act the better!

Other Stroke Symptoms

Watch for Sudden:

β€’ NUMBNESS or weakness of face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.

β€’ TROUBLE SEEING in one or both eyes.

β€’ TROUBLE WALKING, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.

β€’ SEVERE HEADACHE with no known cause.
