Tendonitis

Tendonitis is when a tendon swells (becomes inflamed) after an injury. It can cause joint pain and stiffness, and affect how a tendon moves.

You can treat mild tendonitis yourself. It should feel better in 2 to 3 weeks.

Causes of tendonitis

Tendonitis is usually caused by sudden, sharp movements or repetitive exercise. Repetitive exercise can include running, jumping or throwing.

Tendonitis can also be caused by:

playing a sport
having poor posture or technique while at work
repetitive movements
This is called repetitive strain injury (RSI).

Symptoms of tendonitis

The main symptoms of tendonitis include:

pain in a tendon that gets worse when you move
difficulty moving the joint
feeling a grating or crackling sensation when you move the tendon
swelling, sometimes with heat or redness

Do

warm up before you exercise and gently stretch afterwards

wear supportive shoes or insoles for exercise

take regular breaks from repetitive exercises during a session

Don't

do not over-exercise tired muscles

do not start a new sport without some training or practice

do not do the same repetitive exercises

Some chest infections are mild and they clear up on their own. Others can be severe and life-threatening

Symptoms

Chest infections often follow colds or flu.

The main symptoms are:

chesty cough – coughing up green or yellow mucus
wheezing and shortness of breath
high temperature (fever) of 38 degrees Celsius or above
headache
aching muscles
tiredness

Do

get plenty of rest

drink lots of water to loosen the mucus and make it easier to cough up

use painkillers to bring down a fever and ease headaches and muscle pain

raise your head up while sleeping - use extra pillows to make breathing easier and clear your chest of mucus

drink a hot lemon and honey drink to relieve a sore throat

Don't

do not let children breathe in steam from a bowl of hot water because of the risk of scalding

do not give aspirin to children under 16

do not smoke – it can make your symptoms worse

Symptoms of gout

The main symptoms of gout are:

sudden severe pain in any joint - usually your big toe, fingers, wrists, elbows or knees
red, hot, swollen skin over the affected joint

Causes of gout

Gout sometimes runs in families. It's more common in men, especially as they get older.

You may also be more at risk if you:

have gone through menopause
take some medicines, such as diuretics
eat foods that cause a build-up of uric acid, such as red meat and seafood
have high levels of cholesterol
are carrying extra weight
drink alcohol, especially beer

Do

take any medicine you've been prescribed as soon as you can - it should start to work within 3 days

rest and raise the sore limb

place an ice pack (or bag of frozen peas) wrapped in a towel on the sore joint, for up to 20 minutes at a time

drink lots of water, unless your GP tells you not to

try to keep bedclothes off the sore joint at night

protect the joint against accidental knocks

keep pressure off the joint
