Testosterone, the brain, and mental energy in midlife
Testosterone shapes motivation, drive, and mental energy. In women, it supports focus, cognitive function, energy, and the mental momentum needed for follow-through. During midlife, levels decline.
For some, this shows up as:
– quieter drive
– reduced mental stamina
– tasks feeling heavier
This is not about willpower. It reflects a shift in the brain’s neurochemical support during hormonal transition. A change in energy is not a loss of capability. It is physiology.

MHT is not one thing.

It is often called HRT, but menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) reflects its role more accurately.
It is not a single medication. It is not one-size-fits-all.

Hormones can be delivered orally, through patches, gels or sprays.
And the route matters.
Transdermal options (such as patches) deliver oestrogen through the skin, often resulting in more stable hormone levels.
For women experiencing anxiety, low mood or emotional volatility during peri and menopause, stability can be clinically significant.

Hormonal change rarely moves in straight lines.
Some days feel calm and steady; others feel ‘’zigzaggy’’, irritable, and harder to locate yourself in.
Fluctuation reflects how interconnected systems adjust and respond over time - energy, mood, sleep, and focus may vary as the body recalibrates.
When this variability is understood, urgency softens. Attention shifts from fixing toward observing, pacing, and responding with intention, knowledge and right tools.

Most women are very skilled at loading.

Working harder.
Coping more.
Saying yes.
Pushing through.

What many of us were never taught is how to unload.

I often explain this using a Jenga tower.
Each block represents load: hormones, poor sleep, emotional labour, work pressure, unfinished stress.

Individually, each block feels manageable. Together, the tower becomes unstable.

Unloading is rarely dramatic.
It often looks like:
– doing one more thing instead of resting
– responding when you are already depleted
– saying yes when your body is quietly saying no

Unloading begins when we remove blocks, rather than add more.

“I do not feel like myself anymore.” I hear this often in my work.

I gently explain that there is no returning to an old version of you.

Midlife is not about going back.
It is about meeting the version of yourself that is emerging - wiser, more informed, and better equipped for this stage of life.

When we stop measuring ourselves against who we used to be, we create space to meet who we are becoming with clarity and self-respect.

You do not need a January transformation.
You only need clarity and a  gentle place to begin.
One small step is enough.
Momentum grows from safety, not pressure.

In midlife, many of us are still trying to operate as though our energy and capacity have not changed since our thirties or forties - pushing through and expecting the same response from ourselves.
For many women, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, that approach no longer serves.
Sustainable change comes from alignment rather than pressure, and from clarity rather than urgency. It is about letting our values guide decisions and honouring where we are now, not where we used to be.
If it feels supportive, there is a short 5-minute values exercise in the link below, a gentle way to explore what matters most right now.

Yesterday I delivered a Menopause and Wellness talk with the wonderful Sophie Dooley.

I focused on helping women understand their Why. Why endocrine changes happen and how they influence the whole body and nervous system. When we understand the why, choosing the what becomes clearer.

We also talked about simple self-regulation tools that support calm and clarity.

Sophie shared an inspiring session on positive psychology and building on our strengths.

Thank you to Sinead Smith for hosting such a thoughtful wellness event at Newbridge Business Centre.

If your organisation needs menopause or wellness talks, you are welcome to connect with me.
