The Mulligan Technique, or Mobilisation with Movement (MWMS), is a pain-free physiotherapy approach developed by Brian Mulligan for musculoskeletal injuries. It uses manual joint repositioning combined with active movement to reduce stiffness, alleviate pain, correct joint faults, and restore motion. Techniques include Sustained Natural Apophyseal Glides (SNAGs) for the spine and MWM for limbs.

Key Principles and Techniques

Pain-Free Approach: The core tenet is that all techniques must be completely pain-free to be effective. If pain occurs, the technique is adjusted or stopped.

Mobilisation with Movement (MWM): The therapist applies a specific, sustained glide to a joint while the patient performs the movement that was previously restricted or painful.

Natural Apophyseal Glides (NAGS): These are oscillatory mobilizations applied to the cervical spine facets.

Sustained Natural Apophyseal Glides (SNAGS): These are sustained, mobilization techniques applied to the spine (neck/back) or peripheral joints while the patient moves.

PILL Principle: The technique follows the principle of Pain-free, Instant result, Long Lasting.

Common Applications

Spinal Pain: Treatment for neck pain, headaches, and back pain.

Joint Injuries: Effective for ankle sprains, tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), shoulder impingement, and stiff joints.

Range of Motion: Used to improve flexibility, such as in knee flexion or spinal rotation.

Functional Movement: Helps correct "positional faults" that occur after injury.
