When your mind is overwhelmed with stress, frustration, worry or anxiety - your Qi/energy levels follow suit, becoming scattered, stuck or depleted.

❤️ Anxiety restricts your Heart Qi, creating physical tension
😠Anger and frustration cause your Liver Qi to rise or stagnate.
🤔 Constant worry and overthinking drain your Spleen Qi.
😔 Deep worry and grief constrict your Lung Qi.

Acupuncture helps ease the pressure on the nervous system and is a gentle yet powerful support for emotional well - being. If you are feeling tense, restless or drained - acupuncture may be the reset your body needs ✨

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the earth element governs the Spleen and Stomach organs. The Spleen is the organ most closely associated with the emotion of worry and overthinking.

While it's normal to experience these emotions occasionally, excessive worry can disrupt the natural flow of energy within the body - particularly affecting the Spleen & Stomach then as they are more vulnerable during this time of year.

When the Spleen is out of balance, it can lead to excessive rumination, obsessive thoughts and a constant state of mental activity.

When the Spleen is overburdened by worry, it can lead to :
✨ Digestive Issues: bloating, IiBS symptoms.
✨ Mental Fog : difficulty concentrating and focusing
✨ Fatigue: Feeling of heaviness in the limbs

Understanding the connection between your emotions, the Earth element (that your Spleen needs extra support during this season) and your body can help you take proactive steps to restore harmony within your body and nurture your well-being.

By incorporating mindfulness practices, adjusting your diet - Spleen loves yellow/orange foods and adopting some lifestyle changes that align with the season you can reduce worry's impact on your body. In our next post we'll look at different steps of actions to take 😉

Is it still summer at the moment 🤔 is there a touch of Autumn air? Are we at the cusp of a change of season ....

The long days of summer are winding down and we find ourselves transitioning into the season of the Earth Element - the Spleen and Stomach Meridian systems belong to the Earth Element - during this time of the year we focus on the digestive system, nourishment and stability.

The Earth element also relates to issues of dampness (humidity, heaviness, phlegm) -the climate of late summer. Dampness can show up in the body in many ways : physical fatigue, mental fatigue, worry, digestive problems, muscle weakness.

When there are changes in seasons/nature, it's important that we adjust to the natural rhythms and flow of the earth.

As summer draws to a close, it's time to phase out your consumption of cold raw foods, cold smoothies, ice water and salads.
Warm cooked meals with spices like ginger, fennel and cardamom help to warm things up, resolve dampness and strengthen the Spleen Qi.

The colour of the Earth element is yellow 💛
Eating foods that and yellow and orange are especially supportive for Spleen health, butternut squash, sweet potato, carrots etc
Acupuncture is another way that helps our body and mind move effortlessly with seasonal changes too 😊

Before we talk about the role of acupuncture in gut health, it's essential to understand the concept of the gut-brain axis.

The communication system between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system is a testament to the interconnectedness of our body's systems. The gut and brain are in constant dialogue, influencing each other through immune, endocrine and neural pathways. This explains why digestive issues can affect our mood and cognitive function and also why stress and anxiety can manifest as gastrointestinal symptoms.

Acupuncture benefits for gut health include:

✨ Regulating the autonomic nervous system, promoting optimal digestive function.

✨Reduces inflammation, potentially alleviating symptoms of digestive disorders.

✨Enhances gut motility, supporting a healthy microbiome balance.

✨Reduces stress, indirectly supporting a healthier gut environment

Stress management, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are all crucial for maintaining a healthy gut but acupuncture can be another way towards achieving balance, both in digestive health and in overall health 💜

Yin and Yang : The opposing, yet complimentary, forces that create balance and support our health ☯️

Yang represents activity, heat and expansion.
Yin provides a counterbalance via rest, recovery and refueling.

Yang is warm and drying while Yin is cool and moisturising.

When Yin is deficient or out of balance, the body shows signs of heating up. Some symptoms of Yin deficiency include :

* Dry Mouth
* Dry Skin
* Dry Eyes
* Night sweats
* Sensation of heat in areas like chest, palms of hands & soles of feet.

Heat can cause a lot of restlessness as well as difficulty falling or staying asleep - Yin deficient heat wakes people up during the night or early morning!

Our nervous system is particularly sensitive to imbalances in our body so psychological and emotional symptoms often represent the early stages of Yin Deficiency - increased agitation, minor inconveniences causing feelings of overwhelm, restlessness, anxiety and insomnia.

Physical trauma, overwork, insufficient rest, chronic stress, intense feelings of worry and anxiety can all deplete our Yin.

I know we're all so busy sometimes that we don't make time for proper relaxation - but it's extremely important to set time aside for grounding practices like meditation, yoga or breath-work.

Yin activities are nourishing and so important for balance. Yin is calm. Yin is present 💞

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, every organ has an association with a sense organ. As Springtime is related to the Liver & Gallbladder organs - the Liver is most closely linked to the health of our eyes.

Some unbalanced physical symptoms of an unbalanced Liver System in TCM related to the eyes include :

✨ Red or bloodshot eyes
✨ Blurry Vision
✨ Dry or itchy eyes
✨ Poor night vision
✨ Floaters in the eyes

Itchy, red eyes with seasonal allergies are a common complaint I see in clinic this time of year!!

This season is a good time to focus on eye health through diet, rest and eye exercises and acupuncture.

✨Diet : Incorporate foods like spinach, kale and fish (rich in Omega-3 fatty acid)
✨Rest : Take regular breaks from screen time 😉
✨Eye exercises: Preform exercises like forming a figure 8 with your eyes.

Acupuncture can help harmonise the Liver's energy, which can be beneficial for eye health while also helping to support the body by addressing seasonal imbalances and improving overall well-being. Get in touch if you would like to make an appointment.

Springtime is a great time to turn your attention to the Liver (as Spring is the season of The Liver in TCM) One of the main roles of the Liver in Traditional Chinese Medicine is the smooth flow of Qi and emotions throughout our bodies.
Now, you would think that this would mean that during springtime our Liver is working at its peak, but it actually means that the Liver is most affected during this time of year and more susceptible to falling out of balance.

The liver has to work extraordinary hard when we are under stress, sleep deprived, suffering emotionally, eating a poor diet or drinking alcohol. An overworked, depleted body will lack the nutrients to support liver function and energy and well-being will be affected.

What can we do to keep our Liver Energy balanced and Liver Qi flowing in Spring......

Nutrition is one way.
The colour associated with the Liver is green so when it comes to food, it's all about increasing the greens, especially leafy greens. The taste associated with Spring is sour : lemons, citrus fruits, pickles, apple cider vinegar etc are great choices to include more this time of year.

There are many safe liver supporting herbs, commonly referred to as 'bitters'. Dandelion, nettle, milk thistle can be added to a daily regime. Including fresh dandelion or nettle leaves to our food, or in herbal tea or tincture form for ongoing liver support.

Allow your body to ease into the changing season by making small changes to your diet and routine. Building the health of your Liver in Spring helps to maintain the balance of your whole body during this season.

The concept of Yin and Yang represents opposing, yet complementary, forces in the body. The Kidneys are a vital organ system in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and imbalances in Kidney Yin or Yang are believed to affect overall health.

Kidney Yin deficiency occurs in when the Yin aspect of the kidneys is depleted. Symptoms may include night sweats, hot flashes, dry mouth, insomnia, dizziness and a feeling of heat in the body.

Kidney Yang Deficiency is associated with a lack of Yang energy in the kidneys. Symptoms may include cold limbs, fatigue, aversion to cold, weak lower back, extreme sensitivity to cold, loose stools.

Incorporating dietary adjustments and changes in lifestyle can play a big role in supporting the Kidneys and overall well-being.

And of course - Acupuncture! Acupuncture can help to soothe symptoms, release stagnated areas, restore balance and help with poor circulation to increase warmth in the body too! With the cold season upon us, it's time to take care of your body and support your journey to wellness ☯️
