Some thoughts on yoga for Christians...
Yoga is so much more than physical stretching, and yet it is not a religion. As a philosophy of life it offers mindfulness techniques for body, mind and spirit. Yoga practice may not have made me a better Christian, but it has certainly helped me to open my heart and my mind to what is the true essence of Christian teaching. 😌🙏
Yoga is not of Christian-origin. This should not be a newsflash. A bishop in Ireland just ordered schools in his diocese to stop teaching yoga to children. His reasoning rests on the claim that yoga is not of Christian origin. Instead of yoga the bishop recommends prayer.

There’s a lot I have to say about this.
_
First, yoga IS prayer. While yoga originated from the ancient Vedic culture of India, the spiritual intent of yoga is to bring you closer to God. If your God is Jesus and the holy trinity, then yoga will bring you closer to your personal connection with the Divine. Why Christians who believe God is the most powerful force in the universe think they need to guard themselves against yoga is beyond me.

Second, the idea that a person of one faith should only participate in things that originate from within that faith is absurd. For Christians that means no more Christmas trees or Yuletide wishes. The origins of a winter solstice celebration are decidedly pagan. It also means no more using numbers because the entire system of numerals comes from the Hindu-Arabic world. Lastly, and this may be the deal-breaker, no more sushi, pad thai, spring rolls, curries, fried rice, dim sum, green tea, chai, Turkish delight or other delicious middle eastern or Asian food. No more gun powder or fireworks either because that came from China.
_
But seriously, this is no joking matter. If we trace cultural and historical facts to their Christian origin, the organized form of the religion of Jesus (of whom I am a big fan) has a lot to answer for. Countless wars, colonialism, homophobia, misogyny, racism, just to name a few. Not to mention that limiting oneself to foods that are exclusively of Christian origin would mean a diet of bread and potatoes.
_
And, what really is Christian origin? If we speak about originating from Jesus, we have to say that all things that are kind, loving, generous, forgiving and enlightening are Christian. All things that spread hate, division, animosity, resentment, bitterness are not.
_
The opposite of faith is not doubt, but certitude. Let us have faith and keep practicing 🙏
