This topic comes up regularly in the clinic so here's my thoughts on running and knee health:

So we’ve all become runners during the lockdown it would seem. See I told you it was fun. But not just that. We’ve decided we want to be really fast runners overnight that can run almos…

Have a listen back to the latest Kildare Nationalist Sports Podcast (The Square Ball) where I talked hamstring injuries with Pat Costello.

A busy show this week. Ahead of the Kildare hurlers first Championship game of the season, we hear from David Slattery and get Richard Commins' thoughts on the game. Pat Costello speaks to the injured…

"There were many times I thought I wouldn't make the start line, never mind the finish line due to an achilles problem. But Rob was able to manage the issue by modifying my training and putting a rehab plan in place. As a runner himself he 'gets it'. I couldn't recommend him highly enough".

I remember playing club football while this 9 year old kid kicked balls around during every session, usually more accurately than any of us could.
Coaches and those around the club even back then could see he was destined for excellence.
Injury has tried to stall his development but each time he has come back stronger earning him the award of under 20 player of the year 3 seasons ago when winning the All Ireland with Kildare.

And although now in his twenties and a key figure in the Kildare senior football team he continues to master the basics - an inspiration and role model for any young athlete.

Thanks for the kind words and looking forward to seeing you back in action on the pitch soon

Tuesday Testimonial
Since opening the clinic we've developed a great rapport with some of the countrys top orthopaedic and neuro consultants.

Ms Ruth Delaney is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in shoulder injury. I love her acknowledgement of the importance of physiotherapy following surgery and she is always so helpful with providing specific information for individual patients. I cannot recommend her work highly enough and am delighted to hear she trusts us with the after care of those having undergone surgery..

Whatever we've got to keep some form of regular routine at the moment has never been more important. That's why when a patient presented at the clinic this week with a running related injury we did everything possible to ensure that they could keep running (much to their surprise). It meant reducing their weekly mileage, adding in more rest days, but NOT stopping them run.
Of course there are times where this might be necessary but we know how important running is to you.

"I don’t mind the hard slog of putting in miles. I enjoy it. It is a zen-like state I find myself in when I run; my daily dose of mindfulness. I've solved lots of little problems while out running. And even those I don’t resolve I’ll probably feel more accepting of afterwards."

I love hearing from patients who go on and achieve their goals, not just with their recovery from injury but as they go on and excel way beyond what they thought was once possible.

Thank you .ayu
I hope preparations for your next challenge are well underway.

"Rob made every visit to the clinic a pleasure. His professionalism, friendly nature and attention to detail along with his immensely useful advice allowed me to complete my first 50km challenge with ease and without injury. I would absolutely recommend Rob to anyone who is in need of a physiotherapist".

"Injury taught me I need to learn how to face challenges", Shawn Johnson.

We are all faced with various challenges now:
financial pressures
job (in)security
family
health concerns
anxiety/stress

And we are likely learning a lot about ourselves as to how we deal with these challenges and our own resilience.

Injury is another challenge many will face. Sports injuries, orthopaedic surgery, back pain keeping you from working or after an accident, they are all challenging int heir own right.

Injuries suck. There's no denying it. But sometimes it presents an opportunity.

Is there anything that may have contributed to it?
Is there something you could now do to reduce the risk of future recurrence?
Or is there something else going on that prior to this injury you were completely unaware of that may have lead to you getting injured?
Get your injury assessed by your Chartered Physiotherapist to set you on the path of best management. Set target rehabilitation goals and go out and them.

Understanding your injury is the first step in overcoming it.

We need to know how or why the injury has happened and the likely timeframes involved in getting back to doing what it is you want or love.

Once we have this information we can put a management plan in place to help you achieve your goals.
