Yesterday, 6th March, was World Lymphoedema Day — a moment to raise awareness about a condition that affects many people but is still often misunderstood.
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition caused by a build-up of lymphatic fluid, leading to swelling, discomfort, and changes in the tissues. For many patients, it can affect mobility, daily activities, and confidence. But with the right management and support, quality of life can improve significantly.
Awareness is important, but so is access to the right care. Treatment such as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and appropriate management strategies should always be provided by properly trained and qualified therapists.
In Ireland, patients looking for qualified practitioners can consult the register at MLD Ireland ( https://mldireland.ie/ )
For reliable information about lymphoedema and its management, resources are also available through the Health Service Executive.
Supporting people living with lymphoedema means:
✔ raising awareness
✔ improving access to qualified care
✔ empowering patients with the right information
If you or someone you know is dealing with lymphatic issues, make sure to seek qualified, specialised support. The right treatment can make a real difference.
