Arra Physiotherapy Clinic, Ibolya Giba MISCP

Arra Physiotherapy Clinic, Ibolya Giba MISCP Chartered Physiotherapists and Pilates Instructors I have opened my private practice at 24 South Quay, Newcastle West.

We treat sports injuries, myofascial trigger points, neck and back pain, rheumatologic diseases and any kind of musculoskeletal problem. Physiotherapy services may include dry needling, joint mobilization, soft tissue massage, ultrasound therapy, TENS machine, exercise therapy, stretching, heat etc. We provide first aid during matches and do sports massage and sports taping. If you have a health insurance, you can probably claim some of the fee you pay for a physiotherapy session (depends on type of insurance). If you have tight muscles, we can do half an hour or one hour (full body) massage while you enjoy some relaxing music.

2 therapists are currently working in Arra Physiotherapy Clinic: Ibolya Giba MISCP and John O’Regan MISCP. Pilates is about strengthening your core muscles (abdominal and back muscles), mobilizing the whole spine and stretching the muscles in a safe way. We offer one-to-one Pilates sessions and beginner Pilates classes. For making an appointment call or text Ibolya at 087 4140596 or email ibolya@arraphysio.com. Gift vouchers and home calls are available.

Is cartilage stronger than concrete⁉️

Beluzzi et al. (2023) say cartilage strength is approximately 9 to 40 Mpa. The compressive strength of standard concrete is 17 to 35 MPa.

They have comparable strength, but cartilage is a living, viscoelastic tissue which is far more resilient than concrete under repeated dynamic loading and manages millions of load cycles during its lifetime.

This strength and resilience allows it to function even with a tear. This may be why tears are often asymptomatic, even in runners.

As with everything, individual cases will vary and management will be influenced by the type of tear and symptoms such as locking, giving way or persistent loss of range.

The good news is that many meniscal tears can be managed conservatively without need for surgery. Reassuring people about the toughness of the knee and its cartilage can help them see that rehab is well worth a shot!!

🗣️Our words can affect pain!

Fascinating new research from and colleagues suggests that how we describe an injury can have an immediate impact on a patient’s symptoms.

Pain during a loading test was higher in when people were told that irreversible structural pathology was the cause of pain, compared to an explanation focusing on reversible changes in muscle function.

This is why I tend to use terms that usually describe a temporary, reversible state to describe running injury such as ‘irritation’ or ‘sensitivity’ caused by excessive training.

I usually avoid terms that focus on more permanent changes that may get worse over time rather than better such as ‘degeneration’, ‘wear and tear’, or ‘damage’.

How do you like to explain injuries to patients? Any words or phrases that you find helpful or would tend to avoid? 🤔

Increasing step rate can have multiple benefits for runners. Despite this it's not a cure all! Those with a low starting step rate and gait findings that are likely to improve from an increase (such as over-striding or increased hip adduction) are more likely to benefit.

💡 Physical activity is a modifiable risk factor for more than 30 chronic conditions relevant to the older adult; 150 minutes per week of moderate physical activity can reduce all-cause mortality by 31% compared with no physical activity.
