If you know me, you know I'm thirsty for learning and find so much in life fascinating. So if you are like me and interested in learning, read on as I'm am passing on a little info about Yoga. 📚
When we hear the word yoga most likely we think of movement, we are surrounded by images of trendy studios and trendy people making yoga seem 'fashionable', but that isn't true Yoga. That is a media version. True Yoga is for EVERYONE and encompasses so much more than movement. 🫂
For a deeper journey into a Yogi lifestyle we need to look at The 8 Limbs of Yoga.🪷
They come from the ancient text, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and outline a holistic path—not just physical poses, but a way of life. The more you read, study and practice the greater your understanding and this does bring about an inner stillness and sense of peace. 🌳
So here's a little explanation on each limb. There are mountains of books and texts, classes, teachers and all kinds of resources that you can study, all of which are part of a yogis lifestyle. 🕉️
1️⃣ Yama – Ethical restraints
How we treat others. Includes non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation, and non-greed. For example not criticizing yourself "oh I'm so stupid" or not stealing someone's time.
2️⃣ Niyama – Personal observances
How we treat ourselves. Cleanliness, contentment, discipline, self-study, and surrender to a higher reality.
3️⃣ Asana – Physical postures
The yoga poses practiced to build strength, flexibility, and stability—preparing the body for meditation.
4️⃣ Pranayama – Breath control
Conscious breathing techniques that regulate energy and calm the nervous system. Practice also brings your mind inwards and stops the noise of the mind.
5️⃣ Pratyahara – Withdrawal of the senses
Turning inward and reducing external distractions.
6️⃣ Dharana – Concentration
Focused attention on a single point (like the breath or a mantra).
7️⃣ Dhyana – Meditation
Sustained awareness and uninterrupted flow of concentration through a variety of techniques
8️⃣ Samadhi – enlightenment
A state of deep unity, inner freedom, and connection.
Yoga is more than movement!
