Most of us have been on the receiving end of the silent treatment at some stage or another. People who use the silent treatment usually learned it in their home of origin, from an emotionally immature parent.
A client once shared with me that he had dished out the silent treatment to his partner for over 6 months!
Someone might use the silent treatment when they do not possess the emotional resources to confront the person they have an issue with.
It might make them feel that they are in control of the situation or have the upper hand.
Be under no illusions, the silent treatment is not acceptable behaviour and should not be tolerated. Boundaries need to be established around this behaviour.
If you experience the silent treatment, make it clear that you are open to communicate and willing to explore the issue (whatever that may be). Do not engage any further.

To feel loved unconditionally, a child needs to feel safe and secure. A traumatised parent can often be an emotionally dysregulated parent. Because of their own unresolved trauma, they can often scream, criticise and ultimately humiliate their own children.

Their children will grow up feeling that they are not accepted for who they are. In fact, they can develop the belief that they are 'no good'. They can choose to confirm this to the world through disruptive or antisocial behaviour OR they can work tirelessly to be a 'good child' by becoming a people pleaser. Both are driven by the shame of not being good enough and to their detriment, neither version is the true, authentic version of the child.

Sometimes love is not enough. As parents, we have a responsibility to our children to heal our own trauma -

Women often find themselves unwittingly taking on the role of caregiver, a role laden with a profound impact on their well-being.
Our selflessness is a double-edged sword.
While compassion flows freely, the relentless focus on others can overshadow our personal needs, eroding our ability to grow and thrive.
Women often bear the weight of many burdens that end up compromising our mental and emotional health.
If you feel like the women in the image below, drowning in overwhelm and responsibility for others, you may benefit from relearning how to care for yourself.
Call Oldcastle Couselling Centre on 086 468 5027 to speak with one our highly trained and experienced Counsellors.

Strong mental health isn’t something that just happens to us. It is something we each have to decide is important enough to make a priority.

We all have experiences of when our mental health suffers; our relationships suffer, we lose our ability to cope with stressors in life, we get overwhelmed easily, we get angry easily, we lose our ability to manage our health and wellbeing, we feel out of control, we forget what it is like to feel good, and I’m sure you can think of so many more examples.

So isn’t it interesting that we often let ourselves get to a breaking point before we decide to do something about it?

What would it be like to feel better more often? To be able to manage your emotions? To be able to find fun in life again?

You’re not alone, life can be difficult and trying to change can be hard too.

Here at Oldcastle Counselling we know bettering our mental health is not only worth it but essential in living a more free and enjoyable life.

Reach out to book in an appointment with our mental health gurus. Our therapists look forward to supporting you to find a better relationship with yourself and your life.

We are in the start of autumn and already seeing the darker nights and mornings coming.

Summer can be filled with fun but it can also be super busy which doesn’t leave much room for our inner work.

So now that your kids might be back in school, life might be starting to slow down, maybe there are less social events in your life, and maybe this means it is time to make space for yourself and all that you’ve been holding in.

Maybe it is time to choose yourself, make the space to heal, make the space to talk to someone.

If you’re ready to leave the sense of chaos and busyness behind, then call us today to get matched with one of our therapists.

Do you ever feel like you don’t fit in?

You may have friends yet you feel like the outsider, misunderstood, weird, the odd one out.

This usually happens when we don’t feel good about ourselves, we assume others see us how we see ourselves and maybe we don’t really know ourselves either so how can anyone else?

Counselling is a great support to help build up your confidence, self-compassion, self-worth, and self-love.

What would it feel like to love yourself fully and in return gain a stronger sense of belonging to the world around you?

How do you know when it is time to consult a therapist?

Really the short and sweet answer is, when life, relationships, work, etc. feels uncomfortable, overwhelming, stressful, or simply just feels off.

Why live in discomfort for so long when you can do something to shift it?

If life could start to get better are you committed to making the change and doing the work?

If you answered yes then give us a call at (086) 468-5027 or email us at info@oldcastlecounsellingcentre.ie to start making the changes to living a better, healthy YOU.
