Most of us have been on the receiving end of the silent treatment at some stage or another. People who use the silent treatment usually learned it in their home of origin, from an emotionally immature parent.
A client once shared with me that he had dished out the silent treatment to his partner for over 6 months!
Someone might use the silent treatment when they do not possess the emotional resources to confront the person they have an issue with.
It might make them feel that they are in control of the situation or have the upper hand.
Be under no illusions, the silent treatment is not acceptable behaviour and should not be tolerated. Boundaries need to be established around this behaviour.
If you experience the silent treatment, make it clear that you are open to communicate and willing to explore the issue (whatever that may be). Do not engage any further.
You deserve better ...
