Diastasis re**us abdominis is the thinning and widening of the midline called the linea alba between the ab muscles called the re**us abdominis muscles. Diastasis re**us abdominis is thought to occur in up to 100% of women after 35 weeks gestation.

In most women diastasis re**us abdominis will disappear by 8-12 weeks postpartum. Although we will have a โ€œnew normalโ€ in terms of the distance between the abs after childbirth, some women may notice some bulging or sinking at the midline of the tummy when completing activities which put pressure on the midline such as sitting up in bed beyond the 12 weeks which can require some additional help from physiotherapy. In some cases diastasis re**us abdominis can be linked with stress urinary incontinence and back pain.

A recent study by and his colleagues showed the results of a questionnaire to 453 female Gaelic games athletes.

๐ŸงThe questionnaire focused on menstrual symptoms, contraceptive use and pelvic floor dysfunction. The findings for pelvic floor dysfunction were the following:

โ—๏ธ37% experience urinary leakage during play

โ—๏ธ48% experience urinary urgency during play

โ—๏ธ44% experience ge***al pain during play

โ—๏ธ17.5% experience bowel leakage during play

โ—๏ธ11.3% experience vaginal heaviness during play

โš ๏ธ These are staggering findings showing how common these symptoms are. That does not mean they should be tolerated.

๐Ÿคฑ๐Ÿผ Although previous childbirth was not questioned in the questionnaire the average age of the athletes questioned was 23.6years so authors concluded in line with the average age of giving birth in Ireland that the majority of athletes questioned had not given birth. Which would show that these symptoms arenโ€™t always as a result of childbirth.

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms during sport please do not tolerate them and seek support from your local pelvic health physiotherapist where we can optimise pelvic floor function and coordination and sport specific tasks ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ
