Are you an office worker and get tension and tightness across your upper back, neck and shoulders? This stretch is for you!

It is one of my favourite stretches to do when I am sitting at the computer for a while or generally feeling tight across upper back.

If you can't reach your hands together, let me know and I'll post another option for you!

Do you get “knots” in your neck or shoulders?

People often first think of massage or stretching.

However strengthening the trapezius muscles through its full range of motion can improve the overall function of this muscle and decrease associated pain and sensitivity.

How does sleep affect your Migraine?

We all know that lying down and trying to sleep is sometimes the only thing we can do when you have a very bad Migraine but do you know how insufficient sleep can increase your risk of getting a migraine?

1. When you don't get enough sleep, your body's ability to suppress pain is decreased. This means it is easier to set off a migraine attack .

2. Low sleep duration and poor sleep quality increases a large number of inflammatory markers in the body which can contribute to Migraine.

3. Poor sleep quality can disrupt your body's normal hormone production that occurs during the night and across a 24 hour period. This can also contribute to an increase in migraine.

4. Insufficient sleep limits our ability to regulate our emotions. This process normally occurs as we sleep and process memories. Not getting enough sleep can lower our mood, increase catastrophisation and limit our ability to cope when we do have a migraine.

A successful treatment to improve sleep in people with Migraine is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia. This has shown significant improvements in Migraine frequency and quality of life when patient's sleep improves. This works especially well in people with Insomnia.

If you think your poor sleep is part of your Migraine problem, get in touch to make an appointment.

Do you get a Migraine Hangover?

This is part of the 4 phases of a migraine attack.
1. Pro-drome - food cravings are very common in this phase and often wrongly thought of as the reason your migraine headache came on.

2. Aura doesn't affect 70% of migraineurs but when it does it can be a useful indicator to treat your upcoming headache

3. Headache! Other symptoms commonly occur such as nausea, vomiting, exhaustion, sleepiness, low mood, dizziness, sensitivity to light/sound/smell. Areas of the head or body can be extremely sensitive or sore to touch.

4. Pro-drome or Migraine Hangover. This can last a few days for some people and is characterised by lower intensity headache, pain in the body, low mood to high mood, tiredness, low energy.

Do you recognise these phases.
