Hi everyone
Lately I find myself explaining to patients and public the benefits of Osteopathy.
Naturally, everyone has an opinion based on their experience or lack of experience of Osteopathy.
We all assume things based on the same.
Here are a few examples of what I have recently heard
* I have a bulging disc so I'll wait and get treatment later.
* The muscle behind my knee hurts and I find it difficult to put my sock on that side. Is this your area of expertise?
* My pelvis is 'out of place' can you just put it back in again and I'm on my way.
All three cases, as are many others, are very compatible with Classical Osteopathy as practiced at Taylor & Conroy Osteopaths.
Rather than get bogged down in individual details let's take look at these from the Classical approach.
The aim of consultations is to first identify what is the issue, the evaluation, the diagnosis.
After thorough examination a lot of information is gathered to understand how the persons body is working.
Treatment aims to treat the whole body
* To establish better posture, not for aesthetics but to improve the centre of gravity.
* To remove tissue & joint restrictions, improving mobility and pain free range of movement
, * By achieving the above to improve nerve signals and blood/ lymphatic circulation and drainage
All of this has the affect of ensuring that
- in case 1, the bulging disc is being loaded more appropriately, thereby easing pressure.
That other parts are working efficiently and that improved circulation and nerve conduction improves healing
- In case 2, alignment chances the tension lines of spine and hamstrings, mobilisation removes the restriction in sacroiliac joint changing the tension on hamstrings. Treatment of spinal centres improves circulation therefore healing.
- In case 3, first pelvis is 'not' out of place.
Treatment aligns body including the spine and pelvis, changes tension lines, mobilises. In this case strengthening exercises are required to maintain posture.
To summarise Classical Osteopathy treats the whole body to align, mobilise and integrate.
Treatment improves nerve signalling and improves circulation
