EXPLORE A ROADMAP TO POSITIVE CHANGE:
WHAT’S DIFFERENT ? .This is an informal , safe , confidential service where I believe the main thing is to build a trusting relationship built on empathy and work together towards a positive outcome, building resilience and putting supports in place for a brighter future. I have over ten years experience in social care between work and volunteering. This includes youth mentoring, youth advocate, rehabilitation assistant to people with acquired brain injuries, teen helpline operator, prison outreach programme, supporting victims of crime in the central criminal court, restorative justice panel member, working in the homeless sector and supporting people with addiction and challenging behaviour. Some words are easily thrown around but respect, non judgemental and unconditional positive regard are areas that are the basis of this service and what I feel have worked well over the years.( Along with a good sense of humour !!). INDIVIDUAL : Meetings can be in a relaxed setting with no pressure to talk, such as a persons own home, a park , a café/restaurant etc. Over the years I have found people are more likely to open up and talk when not under pressure to sit in front of a professional and talk. GROUP: Join a weekly group of like minded people for a tea and chat and see where things lead to, you might be surprised at the help it makes. INFORMAL EXERCISE THERAPY: Although not for everyone exercise plays a major role in our mental health, with the chemicals released playing a massive role from even some basis exercise. I am one of the 1st Exercise and Mental Health coaches in the Republic of Ireland ( Scottish Q .A .ACCREDITED ) and a QQI LEVEL 5 Fitness Coach. A new study highlights a powerful connection between regular exercise and emotional resilience. Physical activity doesn’t just tone muscles or improve cardiovascular health—it also reshapes the brain, helping it process and release the weight of traumatic memories. By consistently engaging in movement, the brain can rewire neural pathways, allowing individuals to confront past experiences with greater clarity and less emotional pain.

Exercise triggers the release of key neurochemicals, including endorphins and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). These chemicals play a crucial role in memory processing, mood regulation, and emotional recovery. Over time, their effects can reduce anxiety, stress, and the emotional intensity associated with traumatic events. Essentially, movement becomes a natural form of therapy, supporting both the body and the mind in tandem.

Experts suggest combining different forms of exercise for maximum benefits. Aerobic workouts, strength training, and mindful movement practices such as yoga or tai chi not only improve physical fitness but also encourage a balanced and resilient mental state. Even short, daily sessions can accumulate significant mental health benefits, enhancing the brain’s capacity to manage difficult memories.

Ultimately, exercise may serve as more than a fitness routine—it can be a vital tool for trauma recovery. By strengthening the body and simultaneously rewiring the brain, individuals gain a practical, empowering way to reclaim control over their emotional well-being. Regular movement encourages healing, recovery, and long-term mental resilience, proving that the path to a healthier mind often starts with simple, consistent steps.

I’m an 8 year old with ADHD, and my teacher has just shouted at me…

One minute the teacher was talking. The next, a big blur. Next thing I know, everyone in the class is writing in their books.

“What are we supposed to be doing?” My face feels hot. My mind begins to race. I start to panic.

I don’t want to get embarrassed in front of the class so I ask the person sitting next to me for help. The teacher catches me. In front of the whole class she gives me a row for not paying attention.

Little did I know, I wasn’t silly or a troublemaker. My brain was doing something known as ‘dissociation’ - a coping mechanism where neurodiverse kids mentally detach due to stress in their environment.

This zoning out (which I still do today) feels almost dream like. Time speeds up. And you are completely unaware of your surroundings.

The trick to helping a child with ADHD understand a task is to explain it:

✅ One-to-one
✅ One step at a time
✅ And repeat it a second time

Schools may say they don’t have the time. But my take is that they’d find the time to provide alternative arrangements for a child in a wheelchair in PE.

The issue is that the school system is choosing not to give them time, because of deeply embedded stereotypes about the motives and behaviour of the child with ADHD.

The irony? Once we understand the task - we’ll complete it faster than anyone else.

The truth? We are not lazy - we actually work harder than anyone else just to keep up.

The answer? We just need a little bit of support - understanding and empathy doesn’t take much time, but will make a lifetime of a difference for the next neurodiverse generation ❤️

—————————

Ps at the start of 2026 I made a promise to help 1000 people take up exercise for free (including those with neurodiversity).

I don’t know where I’d be without exercise, but I know it’s overwhelming for many, so…

I have a created free guide called ‘Confused to Confident - Get Exercise Ready in 13 days’ (suitable for all ages)

DM me ‘Confident’ now to get it 😊❤️ just doing my bit to give back!

Some sensible stuff from this Irish Independent article, why all the STRESS ? 'Perhaps it’s because I grow older, but the more I observe the Christmas madness, the more I realise that we allow ourselves to be drawn into that web of stress and pressure and, indeed, bullying to an extent, to provide the perfect Christmas,' says TV personality, author and hotelier Noel Cunningham.

'Let me tell you the perfect Christmas doesn’t exist and give you a word of advice. If you are hosting, remember the people around your table want your presence. They want you to be relaxed and to enjoy their company, as they want to enjoy your company.

'One thing is for sure, the day will come and go, the shops will reopen the next day, so you will not run out of milk or food, and you will remember for many weeks to come the joy you experienced by remembering one simple thing: K. I. S. S.… Keep it simple, stupid!

'Christmas is for people, and sharing all the other things, as in the gifts, food, wine, is on the margins of this wonderful experience – an experience that should be based on sharing, love and respect and being present to one another.'

Might not cure all ills but a good starting point before meds. Not a myth, scientifically proven .
Benefits Of Exercising Outdoors -
Exercising in nature offers numerous benefits, including improved mental health through stress reduction and mood enhancement, and physical health benefits like increased vitamin D, a stronger immune system, and more calorie burn. The dynamic and varied outdoor environment can also boost physical fitness, improve sleep quality, and increase cognitive functions such as focus and creativity compared to indoor workouts.
