Acupuncture Versus Dry Needling
It's so easy to unknowingly confuse the 2 therapies!
1 of my initial questions to new acupuncture clients is
"have you had acupuncture before"?
Many respond with a "yes" and lots with a "no".
Now, I'd like to chat something out here, bit of info if ya like!
In relation to Acupuncture and dry needling, a lot of people, have received dry needling from the likes of their highly trained physiotherapist, physicaltherapist, chiropractor, NMT therapist etc.
If you didnt specifically attend an acupuncturist, you most definitely received a localised technique known as dry needling not acupuncture, and there's a BIG DIFFERENCE! Both have their place, but there's major differences.
Let’s clear this up 👇...
While both use thin filiform needles, acupuncture and dry needling are not interchangeable.
Acupuncture is a complete medical system rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with thousands of years of history, diagnosis, and treatment principles. It treats the whole person, not just a muscle.
In Ireland, becoming an acupuncturist involves a minimum of 3 years of formal study of both TCM and western medicine, extensive clinical hours, and national qualification.
Dry needling is a modern technique focused primarily on muscle trigger points.
Same tool.
Different training.
Different intent.
Different medicine. 🪡
In my opinion, needles don’t define the medicine—education, diagnosis, and medical theory do.
