Some simple tips to guide activities that can help build friendship skills.

It can be difficult to know where to start or how to be creative with this when you feel drained or overwhelmed.

Our advice is to take stock of what you are already doing to nurture friendship skills. It might be a chat after school, bringing your child to activities, modelling respect, care, interest and deep listening.

These ideas are for when you want to take a week to focus on friendships or when there might be a tricky situation to be navigated.

If you want more detailed ideas for activities, check out our Building Skills through Play course on our Parent App, where our Psychologists share advice and insights💜

Paying attention to your child's selftalk is like paying attention to the kind inner voice that will accompany them into adulthood.

Paying attention to your own selftalk is key to this nurturing, as you'll naturally model ways to feel confident, be gentle with yourself and find a path through obstacles and big emotions (or be better able to help them catch themselves when they are not able to hold themselves with this care and kindness).

This post is a simple intro to using positive selftalk during homework time.

It doesn't have to be perfect, or accepted immediately. But think about whatlanguage, phrases and actions seem to help your child shift perspective.

Or what helps them persevere, even when they feel defeated.

Or what do they say to themselves after a homework session that gives you an insight into their world when it comes to school and learning.

And what thought reframes have you had to do for yourself around study or learning new things, and how can you share these in a supportive way?

To listen to these advice podcasts, simply open the School Section in our Parent App.

This technique from onetoughjob.org is a great way to use a concrete visual to guide what can feel like an overwhelming conversation.

Of course it's important to remember that some children will not talk about their day this directly. This can be for many reasons and is a common experience.

A technique such as this might suit a child who does like to chat about their day but who may get overwhelmed while doing so.

You can adjust the questions on each finger to suit their age and stage, and maybe be more specific to what you know is good and what might be tricky about their day.

Always try to end on the fun and silly question though, to give that lovely connection with a belly laugh.

You might also use this technique to share about your day in a way that can help them understand what type of information they might share.

Are there any debrief techniques that you use at home and find helpful? We would love to hear more ideas so that we can share with other parents in our stories or the comments below 💜

Lots of questions from Parents in our Psychology Clinic this week wondering how they can support their child through Xmas exams.

Different people respond to exam stress in different ways. You might have a child who can't switch off from study and in a state of worry, feeling wired and losing sleep.

Other teens will feel stuck in overwhelm or procrastination - unable to relax, but unable to study.

In our series of School Podcasts our Psychology Team outlines ways that you can support your child through this time.

We also recommend checking out the study and exam stress tools our Teen App💜

Both can be downloaded through the link in our bio - best of luck to everyone facing into exams this week 🙏

This is one of the most common questions we are asked in our Psychology clinic during the first few weeks of school.

Here are just some of the tips that can help create a comfortable space for an afterschool conversation.

However it's also important to remember that each child or young person will find their own comfort level with this type of communication, and we have met many families where they find alternative ways of finding out about the school day if their child continues to prefer to keep it to themselves (check in with teachers during the term, communication books, using therapeutic stories etc)

You can find more insights and advice in these podcasts on our Parent App, available to download for free through the link in bio.

Transitional objects are small items that help your child feel calm and secure when they are separated from you.

We often associate this type of comfort item with smaller children when they might be transitioning into their own room or becoming more independent.

However, older children can also benefit from using such objects - especially during the back to school transition.

You can find more advice from our Educational Psychologist in our recommended podcast on our Parent App.

This 5 minute listen gently guides you through what to consider when selecting and using a transitional object, and is part of our Back to School support series💜

What objects have you found helpful for your child? Feel free to share any ideas with other parents in the comments below💜

You can read them together or put on the audio for your child, and take some time to reflect on what resonated afterwards.

This is also an opportunity to practice the many sensory relaxation tool and brain training tools on our InsightKids App.

Some gentle tips for anyone who is struggling to get back to sleep after waking in the night💜

Think of these practices as a way of communicating with an overthinking brain or physically stressed body.

I am safe.
I will get to sleep.
I gift myself gentle time and patience as I wind down for rest.

Wishing you all a restful eve💜
