Having grown up surrounded by horses and ponies and being involved in hunting and pony club as a child, then eventing and racing thoroughbreds as a teenager and young adult and finally riding club, horses were always going to play an important part in my life.
I completed a Bachelor of Science (Hons Biology) in 1992 and then a Post Graduate Diploma two years later in Equine Science. My first full time job was for a bloodstock agency and I was involved in organising shipping of horses abroad. I then moved to take over the insurance side of things, mostly Thoroughbreds both breeding and racing, but also some Sport Horses. In 1998 I headed to Australia to see a bit of the world and two years later, on returning just in time for the millennium celebrations I had a complete change of career and went to work for a Telecoms/Call Centre company. A bit of study and I was involved in the programming side of things, another few years, some more study and I was a project manager. A husband and a few kids later and I found myself taking a career break to concentrate on running around after four small boys!
A couple of years ago I started to think about what I would do next, I had a horse at the time that was “just not right” and I spent a year visiting vets, physiotherapists, chiropractors, physical therapists and anyone else that I thought might be able to help him out. This whole experience did make me think about a career in equine rehab/physical therapy but there were no available courses worth doing in Ireland so that idea got shelved. Last year (2019) while on my annual RDS pilgrimage I came across the EquiEd Trade stand and it was a lightbulb moment. My biggest fear apart from how would I manage more study was would I be able to learn the relevant techniques required? So here I am now, half way through my course realising how much I never knew about horses and how much more I have to learn, but loving the journey and learning more with every horse I meet and every case study I complete. I am so excited to hopefully be qualified in early 2021 and start treating horses and ponies full time.
In the meantime I am busy with study and case studies so do get in touch with any queries and I would love to help if I can.
