Why Deep Pressure Helps Regulate Children

Deep pressure is one of the tools to help children regulate their level of alertness. Supporting behaviour and emotional regulation.

When we talk about regulation, we refer to the child’s ability to reach and maintain an optimal level of arousal that allows participation in daily activities: playing, learning, socializing, sleeping, or eating.

🔬 How does deep pressure work?

Firm, consistent pressure on the body stimulates receptors located in the skin, muscles, joints, and deeper tissues. This information travels to the central nervous system, providing the brain with clear input about the body’s position in space, which helps modulate other sensory responses.

This sensory input has an organizing effect on the nervous system by activating the parasympathetic system, which promotes calm, recovery, and rest.

📈 Benefits

✅ Regulates arousal levels: helps children shift from states of hyperactivity, anxiety, or agitation to a calmer, more organized state.

✅ Helps sensory overload: many children experience difficulties processing environmental stimuli (noises, lights, touch, movement). Deep pressure acts as an “anchor” that stabilizes the nervous system and reduces reactivity.

✅ Improves body awareness: provides the brain with clear information about body parts, which supports motor control and coordination.

✅ Facilitates participation: a more regulated child is better able to engage in schoolwork, play, mealtime, and social situations.

✅ Promotes a sense of safety: deep pressure provides physical containment, which often translates into emotional containment as well.

⚠️ Always adapt intensity, duration, and frequency according to each child’s needs, and carry out activities under supervision.

🥳 We are all different and need different things, always observe how your kid is reacting to it!

💡 In the following posts, I’ll share two simple deep pressure activities you can try at home. ⬅️

One of our gorgeous clients who attends for Occupational Therapy came up with this beautiful idea of a pocket hug. This idea came from his own experience of being in school and needing some regulation. Once he has his key ring in his pocket it acts as a sense of regulation or a hug as describes. He has made these for other kids to use also.

What a gem he is
