Some children may not register sensory input as easily, which can make them appear constantly on the go or not fully aware of what’s happening around them.

Behaviours might include:
🤸 Appearing clumsy or unaware of their body in space
✋ Touching everything or mouthing objects
🔄 Constant fidgeting or movement (rocking, spinning, bumping into things)
📢 Speaking loudly or making repetitive noises
😅 Not noticing pain, temperature, or strong smells

Some kids may seem zoned out, slow, or unaware of their body. Quick sensory input can help them get ready for the day!

Try this before school:
• 🏋️ Heavy work: carry backpack, push/pull chores, bear crawls
• 🔄 Movement: jumping, spinning, swinging
• ✋ Tactile/oral: textured toys, crunchy/chewy snacks, rub their body to “wake up”
• 🎶 Auditory/visual: upbeat music, call-and-response games
• ✨ Combine senses: movement + heavy work + tactile for max alertness

Tips:
• Short, frequent bursts work best
• Watch what activates your child most
• Balance alerting with brief calm moments

Afterschool ideas could be:

🏃 Active play: obstacle courses, climbing, trampolines, swinging
💪 Proprioceptive input: carrying shopping bags, pushing/pulling activities, weighted vests
🌈 Tactile exploration: sand play, textured toys, finger painting
⚽ Interactive fun: scavenger hunts, ball games, dancing

✨ Every child is unique. An evaluation with an occupational therapist could give you more insight into your child’s sensory profile and the best ways to support them. Always remember the importance of a little time to unwind after school, it can make the rest of the day much smoother.

Some children react stronger to sensory input that most people tolerate well.

Behaviours might include:
👂 Covering ears at loud sounds (vacuum cleaner, fire alarm, noisy lunch hall)
🍽️ Avoiding certain food textures (slimy, crunchy, mixed textures)
👕 Refusing certain clothes (scratchy fabrics, tags, tight elastic)
🙅 Reacting strongly to touch (light touch, crowded spaces, handshakes)
🌟 Feeling overwhelmed in bright or busy environments

Afterschool ideas could be:
🛋️ Quiet corners or chill zones: beanbags, soft lighting, noise-cancelling headphones
👐 Calm sensory play: theraputty, water beads ( with adult supervision), kinetic sand
🧘 Gentle movement: yoga, stretching, balance games
🎨 Creative time: painting, colouring, sticker collages

✨ Every child has their own sensory profile. It could be helpful to have an evaluation with an occupational therapist for more tailored strategies. And don’t forget, after school is the perfect time to unwind before homework or family activities.

Zara is in her third year of a Master’s in Creative Psychotherapy and Play Therapy with The Children’s Therapy Centre.
✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

Zara believes play is a child’s natural way of expressing themselves, and she
places creativity and fun at the heart of her work. She also values working closely with parents and caregivers, recognising them as the true experts on their child.
Zara’s goal is to provide a safe and supportive space where children can explore, express,
and grow on their therapeutic journey.
