I'm an acupuncturist with clinics in the Willow Rooms in Skerries and Four Swans in Duleek.

I specialise in fertility and women's health but regularly treat a broad range of, often related, conditions including digestive problems, stress, anxiety, insomnia and emotional issues.

I have completed Naava Carmen's Advanced Fertility Diploma and Dr Trevor Wing's Post-Graduate Diploma in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Fertility. My training covered both female and male fertility; reproductive immunology; assisted reproductive techniques (including IVF), complex pregnancy conditions; PCOS; endometriosis and ovulatory and hormonal disorders.

I am trained to think outside the box, question a little more and dig a little deeper, always taking the time to look beyond symptoms and understand the true root causes.

There’s very little I enjoy more than finding the root cause of a client’s “unexplained” infertility - I get genuinely excited about test results, microbiomes, and all the little clues the body gives us. I combine fertility-focused acupuncture with evidence-informed approaches and practical experience of supporting women and couples trying to conceive. This means you get a practitioner who understands both the science and the human side of fertility - the big picture and the little details that often make all the difference.

I have a new qualification!

Female health and fertility are very complex areas and I always want to be sure that I have the most up to date knowledge and am using the most effective techniques to help people. After researching courses, I decided to undertake the intensive post graduate training program in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with Dr Trevor Wing. It was hard work but incredibly interesting and informative and I have just received my diploma. I am now an associated practitioner of the Women’s Natural Health Practice in London!

The course provided in-depth training over a six-month period in relation to female heath, reproductive medicine and pregnancy care with a focus on the benefits of combining Traditional Chinese Medicine with conventional medical investigations.

Acupuncture and IVF

Studies have shown that women who undergo acupuncture prior to IVF have higher success rates and many IVF clinics recommend acupuncture as an adjunct treatment to reduce stress and increase blood flow to the reproductive organs.

As well as working to balance your hormones, reduce stress and increase your chances of getting pregnant, working with an acupuncturist can give you the opportunity to talk with someone who understands both the scientific and the emotional side of what you’re going through.

I have completed post graduate training in fertility, gynaecology and obstetrics and will use your western medical diagnosis and test results to inform your acupuncture treatment. I can also help to explain your test results and discuss further investigations that may be beneficial.

IVF is physically and emotionally stressful so whether or not you are looking to try acupuncture, anything you can do to look after yourself and improve your overall wellbeing is a good idea. Simple steps you can take yourself include getting plenty of sleep, eating a healthy, balanced diet, drinking lots of water and taking time to relax and do things you enjoy.

Acupuncture for fertility continued...

A key reason that acupuncture has become well known as a beneficial treatment for infertility is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. Stress can cause hormone imbalances, stop ovulation, disrupt the menstrual cycle and affect s***m count, all of which can cause or contribute to infertility. Acupuncture can induce relaxation by releasing endorphins and reduces the effect of stress hormones on the body.

However, acupuncture has been shown to help with far more than just stress relief. For example, it can improve fertility by:

💛Regulating the menstrual cycle

💛Balancing hormones

💛Improving blood flow to the ovaries and uterus

💛Improving the condition of the lining of the womb

💛Improving s***m count and motility

💛Addressing underlying causes of infertility such as PCOS or fibroids

Infertility is affecting more and more people. The WHO estimates that globally there are between 48 million couples and 186 million individuals living with infertility (defined as the failure to get pregnant after 12 months of regular, unprotected s*x).

There is increasing recognition and evidence that acupuncture and Chinese Medicine may help improve fertility, and can either complement conventional treatments or provide an alternative approach for both help getting pregnant and in supporting a healthy pregnancy.

Regardless of where you are on your fertility journey, acupuncture can help support you through the process. Chinese Medicine can be beneficial whether you are: just considering trying to get pregnant and want to ensure your cycle is healthy and your hormones balanced; have been trying for a while and need some support and guidance on why it may be taking longer than expected; or are already going through fertility treatment.

People are often surprised when I ask to take their pulses at the first consultation - even more so when I spend a bit of time doing it and check both wrists.
"Am I alive??" is a common question during pulse taking. So at least that's an easy one - if you're chatting to me while I take your pulse you are definitely alive! Proof of life is not actually what I'm looking for (though it is definitely a bonus) - pulse taking is an important part of the diagnostic process.

In TCM we check three different positions on each wrist to feel pulses which relate to each of the organs. The speed, strength, depth and qualities of the pulses provide essential information about your health and are key to your diagnosis and treatment plan. The pulses are also checked before, during and after every treatment to monitor progress and adapt the approach as needed.

20% off initial consultations in September!

The summer holidays are great for spending time with family and getting outdoors in the sun (and rain) but it's too easy for self-care to fall to the bottom of a long to do list.

I'm offering 20% off all initial consultations booked in September to help recover from the stress or over-indulgence of the summer, to get your health back on track or just to let you prioritise some important relaxation time.

Acupuncture sessions can help with stress and anxiety and you can prolong the effects by wearing ear seeds on the Shen Men acupuncture points between treatments. I use ear seeds regularly and find them incredibly effective for keeping calm.

If you're not ready to try acupuncture, or even if you are, there are lots of ways to help manage your stress levels at home. Some of the most effective ones include:

✔️Meditation
✔️Breathing exercises
✔️Yoga
✔️Maintaining a good work life balance
✔️Regular exercise
✔️Reducing alcohol and coffee

There is lots of information out there and so many people who can help you find what works for you so why not start trying to incorporate some (or all!) of these into your daily routine.

Stress is a normal part of life, which actually has very important and beneficial effects that help us respond in emergencies or achieve under pressure. Unfortunately, the nervous system sometimes has a hard time distinguishing between emotional and physical threats. So your body may react in the same way to an upcoming work presentation as to a life or death situation.

Chronic stress can impair your immune system and contribute to numerous physical and mental health issues such as:

👎Anxiety
👎Depression
👎Insomnia
👎Headaches
👎Digestive issues
👎Aches and pains
👎Skin conditions
👎Gynaecological and reproductive issues

Acupuncture can help manage these conditions but it can also reduce your stress levels to try and prevent them from occurring in the first place. It does this by balancing the nervous system to help lessen the stress response and reduce the level of stress hormones such as cortisol.

The last couple of years have been very stressful for the majority of people and the opening up of society is causing further anxiety for many. Studies have found acupuncture to be a safe and effective way to alleviate stress and anxiety. If you haven't tried acupuncture for managing your stress levels, now could be the time!

This point on the leg - known as Stomach 36 or Leg Three Miles - is one of the most effective points for boosting your immunity and keeping your system healthy. It also promotes healthy digestion so will help ensure you are absorbing important nutrients from your food.

While needling and applying moxa (see earlier post on how this works) is the most effective way of boosting immunity, you can also stimulate this point at home. It's located approximately 4 finger widths below your knee cap, one finger width from the edge of your shin bone. You may feel a depression where the point is and in some people it is slightly tender when you apply pressure.

Massaging this point daily on both legs for 2 to 3 minutes at a time can help boost immunity, nourish blood and improve your energy reserves.

Other steps you can take to boost your immune system naturally are:

☀️Getting plenty of fresh air.
⚽Doing moderate exercise such as walking, swimming or cycling for 20 to 30 minutes a day.
🥰Breathing exercises, meditation, salt baths or whatever helps you to reduce your stress levels.
💧 Drinking plenty of water.
😴Sleeping - getting a good night's rest is essential for maintaining a healthy immune system that can fight off illness.
