Yoga has many facets, it covers the entire field of our existence, physical, sensory, emotional, mental and spiritual to the highest self-realisation. It includes physical postures, ethical disciplines, breath control, sensory methods, affirmations, visualisations, prayers, mantras and meditative disciplines.

People tell me they aren't flexible enough to do yoga, Yoga builds flexibility in the body, mind and nervous system. All you need is an open mind ✨️

There is something that I need you to know. My classes are a safe space.

We can feel a range of emotions on the mat. You might feel frustration in challenging poses, and joy when you finally get it. You might feel a connection to yourself, feel open, happy, sad, present, or disconnected. There are days when the mind is busy, and days when it is a little calmer. Yoga is a holistic and healing practice. You get the opportunity to connect to yourself, all of you, body, mind and spirit. You have a chance to feel the emotions, move them, and release the ones that are ready to go. I am just giving you the tools and a safe space where you feel held to come back to yourself, to heal yourself.

I don't like this trend of showing funny/wrong things clients do in class, I find it hurtful, and its not helpful. I know there is no bad intention for most people doing this but I personally find it a bit shaming. I am here to guide you through classes, I will not mock you or talk about you behind your back if you do poses or moves "wrong". I will queue verbally, demonstrate and come help and adjust you if needed.

Will not take pictures or videos. Any images I have from group classes are from teacher training, from photoshoots that were set up especially to take pictures with the students there, pictures others took and shared with me, or taken with consent. Your practice is sacred, it is for you to connect to yourself, to feel and be vulnerable, it is my job to guide and hold you, it is not time for me to work on my social media.

I am trauma informed. This means I understand that the body holds many emotions, some poses may make you feel vulnerable, can trigger fight or flight, can bring back unpleasant memories, and trigger a trauma response. I have done many courses over the years that are trauma informed and plenty of my own study, I am always available for a chat before or after class, however, I am still a yoga teacher not a trained therapist.

Please get in touch if you have any questions or if you feel hesitation about joining a class, I will help as best I can 🙏

So, we know we need to take care of our physical bodies to stay young, but what about the rest of you? You are not just your physical body!

We need to take care of our energy bodies, our emotions, our minds and our souls.

Your energy body is an energetic system in which prana flows, this is your vitality, your life force energy also referred to as your qi or ki. We can cultivate and direct energy through this energy system, through our nadi's, bringing balance, clarity, clearing any blockages, and allowing you to feel vitalised, energised and alive! We do this through the practice of asana (the poses) and Pranayama. We direct the prana, the energy in our bodies through breath control, breathwork techniques.

Your mental and emotional layer also need to be taken care of. We can have a negative mindset, and tell ourselves we are too old, unfit, overweight etc etc. Our minds can be busy, and overwhelmed, and there can be lots of emotions coming to the surface that we push back down rather than feel. Pranayama, meditation techniques, meditation and mantra can help to quiet the mind. They give us tools to come back to, to practice and make a habit. To build a sense of calm, a steady feeling as the norm. They allow us to feel our emotions and release the ones that are ready to release. They bring harmony.

What about your soul? You don't have to be religious or spiritual to do things to make your soul happy. It can be as simple as being in fresh air, in nature, with loved ones or animals, laughing! It is doing the things that light you up, and make you feel present, alive, happy, and joyful! When our other layers are balanced - physical, energetic, mental/emotional we can tune into the soul, we can feel peaceful, and blissful. We are not longer consumed by blockages in the other layers and we can now tune in and listen to our soul, maybe find your soul purpose, your dharma.

You can live a life of joy, feeling strong and healthy physically, energetically, mentally and emotionally. As .yogrishi says "Wellbeing is your birthright".

This second slide seems to have hit home for a lot of you, and I'm glad! I'm glad because YOU can do something about it now!!

Let's look at this on a physical level.

We need to move our bodies. This will not only work on our mobility and flexibility, but also our lymphatic system doesn't have a "pump" and relies on movement to remove toxins from our bodies. We need to get our hearts pumping to strengthen our hearts and lungs. We also need to load our bones to build bone mass density. Nutrition is also key. We can't put bad foods in our bodies and expect to feel good!

Yoga and Pilates are amazing practices for the physical body. We work on mobility, flexibility, we move getting our lymphatic system flowing, we get our heart pumping, pranayama strengthens the lungs and we load our bones - think plank, pushing your feet into the earth, in pilates we use small equipment to load our bones.

But.... it's not enough! (I know... controversial 😱) People often ask me if I do anything besides yoga and pilates. YES! I very reluctantly do some cardio to get my heart pumping 😅 and I lift weights at home and in a class. We need to lift weights!!

This is not about the aesthetic. This is about having strong, functional bodies to grow old in but feel young in. To retain independence. To feel good in our bodies, not just free from pain but energised and vitalised.

So what can you do? Go for a brisk walk/jog/run/swim to get your heart rate up. Lift weights. Go to a qualified fitness instructor or personal trainer to get help, to get your form right, and find what is suitable for you. Get nutritional advice.

I emphasise the qualified because this is really important. Please don't be shy asking people what they are trained in. The people who are qualified will be delighted to tell you how hard they worked to get this qualification. I personally have been going to Sharon for many years now for anyone in Skibbereen.

The moral of the story is to move! Yoga, pilates, walk, run, swim, dance, lift weights. And eat well 😋

✨️ Courage ✨️

It takes courage to step on the mat for the first time. The ego can be loud, thoughts of not being "flexible" enough, not belonging, body insecurities, mind insecurities. Not knowing what to expect.

It takes courage to keep coming back to the mat, to face yourself time and time again. To do this work, to face the emotions and thoughts that rise. It takes courage to release the things that rise, some of it is so old, it might not even be yours, it could be ancestral.

It takes courage to learn, to let go of old ideas, and be open to something new. To be willing to unlearn, question, discover, feel, witness, observe. It takes courage to challenge yourself in this way.

It takes courage to be vulnerable, to be open, to enquire within. To grow and live a fulfilling life takes courage. Repatterning, reprogramming, aligning to your true self is not an easy task, but you owe it to yourself. You have the power of transformation, you just need to find your courage and step on your mat.

My Journey So Far...

I started my yoga journey around 2013 when I was living in Perth, Western Australia. I went to my first class, like many others, looking for a new type of physical exercise. I was surprised to find I couldn’t do many of the poses and I could not believe how stiff my body was and how little balance I had. I went to the gym regularly but I was really surprised that I found yoga physically very challenging. But I quickly saw the benefits. I noticed my body ease into the poses after some practice and felt myself build strength and flexibility and I loved this change I was going through. I also noticed it was one of the only ways I could get my overactive “monkey mind” to slow down. Soon I was practicing 4 / 5 times a week, I was fortunate enough to have amazing teachers at The Yoga Vine in Perth who thought me so much and helped me deepen my journey and I found myself wanting to learn more about the asanas, anatomy, the history, philosophy, meditation and pranayama so I decided to do my teacher training.

I did my 200 hour yoga teacher training In Koh Lanta in Thailand with Dr Gaurav Malik - Ashtak yoga school in 2017. It was an intense, physically and emotionally challenging 4 weeks but an amazing opportunity to immerse myself in the practice and learn everything Gaurav had to teach us. I learned more than I ever thought I would and couldn’t wait to continue my journey and learning.

Over the years I have had the opportunity to practice with and learn from some amazing teachers in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Ireland. I have practiced many different types of yoga including Vinyasa, Hatha, Ashtanga, Yin and Hot yoga. I now teach in Abbeystrewery Hall, Bridge Street, Skibbereen: Dynamic Vinyasa Tuesdays 8pm and Sunrise Vinyasa Thursdays 7am and in Caharagh Mondays at 7pm. I feel so fortunate to be able to share the things I have learned over the years with people and also continue my learning through teaching, completing more trainings and reading. I believe you are forever a student, in every aspect of life and there is so much to learn. I have a huge interest in wellness in general – fitness, nutrition, mindfulness, self-care and essential oils and I am constantly furthering my learning.
