March is
Pets are at risk from a large number of toxins and accidental toxin ingestion occurs more commonly than you may think, and the numbers are rising.
The Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) recorded almost 32,000 cases in 2025, a 26% year on year increase¹.
So, why March for Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month? Because Springtime is one of the riskiest seasons for toxin exposure due to the abundance of Easter treats and increased exposure to dangerous toxins in the garden such as spring plants, insect bites and stings.
Springtime Toxins:
• Chocolate, raisins and sultanas (hot cross buns)
• Tulips, daffodils and hyacinths
• Fertilisers, w**d killers and slug bait
• Insect bites and stings
If you suspect your pet has ingested or been in contact with something toxic then contact your vet immediately.
1. The Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) and Animal Poison Line reported handling almost 32,000 inquiries regarding pet poisoning in 2025, which is a significant increase from 25,300 in 2024
