Building inner strength through spirituality isn’t about rigid rules, it’s about finding meaning, hope, and support for a stronger mind.

Here are a few powerful practices to boost your mental well-being, whether through organized religion or a personal path:

Find Your Purpose: Reflecting on a larger purpose or core values shifts focus from daily distress to the bigger picture. This sense of meaning is a buffer against hopelessness.
Practice Mindful Reflection: Prayer, meditation, or contemplation slows thoughts, focuses on the present, and helps regulate emotions. Start with just 5 minutes a day.
Build Community: Shared beliefs foster belonging, which is vital for mental health, especially during tough times. Combat isolation by connecting with others.
Cultivate Gratitude & Forgiveness: Focus on what you’re thankful for to boost optimism, and release emotional burdens through forgiveness (for self and others).
Find Strength in Wisdom: Sacred texts or philosophical readings offer time-tested perspectives on suffering and resilience.
Practice Positive Coping: When facing a crisis, lean on belief in a benevolent higher power or universe for strength, instead of feeling abandoned.
Connect with Awe: Spend time in nature, listen to powerful music, or create art to connect with something greater than yourself.

Your spiritual journey is unique to you. What is one small practice you can try adding to your routine today?

Mental health is often seen as being the burden of the individual. While it’s true that we are all responsible for ourselves, connection to others is such a powerful antidote to despair, loneliness and feeling stuck.

We are wired to seek strong bonds with others. Thousands of years ago it was our ability to form tribes, work together and share collected knowledge that brought us to where we are now. Creating community is what we are best at.

Think about who is your support system? How can I support others myself? How can we as a community speak truth to those in power to get our needs met?

Remember that we are never truly alone. Even in the most extreme of circumstances people have come together to share experience. There are people who care.

Many of us have an embedded belief in a “not good enough” self, and at the same time can be persecuted by a sense of a self we believe we should be but are not.

Many of us go through life assuming these two false serves to be true. For some people who feel suicidal the pain of experiencing the “not good enough” self and despairing that can never be the self they “should” be, can be overwhelming.

With the right support We can get to recognise that there is a true self that is authentic and unique that has been hiding in plain sight. A client described it as being like buried treasure, who we really are. No two people can ever be the same. With practice and self compassion, we can get to become more fully ourselves with no need to negaate ourselves in comparison to others. This is a much over simplified summary of a process that can be difficult, painful and protracted, but at the same time, be genuinely transformative.

World su***de prevention day aims to reduce the stigma of su***de and mental health issues and to empower everyone to support and signpost loved ones to seek support when they are struggling. We’ve come a long way in Ireland in terms of tackling stigma associated with su***de and mental health but we still have a way to go too. By talking openly about our struggles with others and showing kindness and understanding to others, it encourages people to talk openly when they are struggling. It also shows that lots of us experience difficult times and lean on others for support and we come through the other side of this, demonstrating our resilience. This year we’re focusing on “hope through action” and this means promoting small acts of kindness, open conversations and timely access to support services. Let’s all think about carrying out one small act of kindness today and notice how positive it feels not only to receive but to offer a small act of kindness to someone else today.
