Common myths about back pain.
Once your back has gone once-it will always be 'weak' and prone to re-injury.
Many people who have had a very painful episode of low back pain, never seek the professional advice to rehabilitate their back to their previous level of movement and strength once they have recovered. They can become fearful of certain movements and avoid them, meaning that their back is no longer conditioned to do them and therefore they are perhaps more likely to experience recurrent episodes of pain that are difficult to manage. This doesnt have to be the case!
The best way to deal with an acute episode of back pain is rest.
You may need to modify your activities and take 'relative rest' from some things. However movement where possible, especially individualised stretches and core recruitment for you, and your specific low back condition will fast track your recovery.
Back pain is brought on by being too active (too much lifting, dragging, pulling).
Much of low back pain is linked to inactivity, meaning your muscles and joints become deconditioned. Sometimes when we become active in this scenario, this is when we feel pain....the answer is guidance with becoming more, and not less active.
I am bound to have low back pain because of my age and need to accept that I must be more sedentary.
As we age, our joints can show age-related changes too, much like aquiring grey hairs or wrinkes. Part of these changes involve our joints becoming less naturally lubricated. Moving our joints and using our muscles can help to replace this natural lubricant. The stronger the muscles are, the more protection our joints get and we become less prone to pain and disability. 'Move it or lose it'. If pain is an issue it is wise to seek specific professional advice with this.
I am bound to have low back pain because of my previous pregnancies and I have to live with this.
There are many reasons why we may acquire low back or pelvic pain during or after pregnancies. These include the changes to a woman's body shape and weight distribution as the baby grows, a reduction in recruitment of our core muscles and pelvic floor and horemonal changes. These can result in altered or reduced movement of our lumbar spine which can reduce recruitment of core muscles further and cause an over reliance on larger, less efficient muscle groups. This too can be rectified with the correct assessment and training.
Don't let back pain ruin your quality of life and never assume nothing can be done to help!
