The gut is now considered to be the bodies ‘second brain’. Diet, lifestyle, stress, and medication can lead to digestive complaints. I treat many clients who suffer with issues such as bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion and heartburn. When a digestive system is out of balance clients will often use words like sluggish, no energy, reduced appetite, poor immune response and generally feeling out of balance. As a result I would like to explain how reflexology can aid digestive stress.

The body’s autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic) is responsible for triggering and turning off our bodies stress response, otherwise known as ‘fight or flight’ reactions. Simply put, stress is the sympathetic nervous system in overdrive, and the digestive system is the most common site of expression of stress related illness. At a conscious level we experience rapid heart beat and increased breath as the body prioritises the vital organs of lungs and heart to survive the oncoming threat. At an unconscious level the digestive process is forced to slow down to an inefficient rate with reduced blood supply and reduced enzyme production. A Reflexology treatment will aim to:

•      Promote parasympathetic responses, that is, switching off the stress response.
•      Stimulate all the nerve routes to digestive organs through the spinal column reflex with great results.
•      Work specifically the vagus nerve reflex.
•      Promote gut peristalsis bringing energy to gut function.

Many clients remark on how often their stomach gurgles during treatments and how in the days following the treatment they will experience good bowel movements. So have a serious look at the foods you eat and manage your stress levels with some reflexology. The message is clear, look after your gut and it will help look after you.

Reflexology for Men’s Health  - As a reflexologist registered with the NRRI we are encouraged each year to attend CPD training days.

Recently I attended a CPD training day on Reflexology for Men’s Health with Lee Anthony Taylor who is practising as a reflexologist for over 25yrs. During this time he has been advocating for men to have more access and information about men's health issues while also promoting reflexology as part of men’s health care.

I was drawn to this course because I too needed to explore why so few men attend my clinic for reflexology and how I as a reflexologist can encourage men to consider reflexology and experience its health benefits.

Men live in a time where they are now given permission to connect with their emotions, be vulnerable and feel pain.  However men are adapting to many new roles and these changes are happening at a very fast rate which can leave men overwhelmed and experiencing high levels of stress as they work through and adapt to their new identity. We are all well aware that untreated stress can lead to illness Reflexology is a wonderful support therapy to treat conditions and symptoms caused by stress.

So if you’re wondering what is reflexology as a therapy, this is my explanation.
* I work with the feet mostly but sometimes the hands.
* It is a touch therapy.
* The body is represented in different zones / reflex points on the feet and hands.
* With gentle pressure I work these reflex points to balance the body's energy.
* The scientific definition of energy is “the ability to work”.
* We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things.
* When this energy flow is uninterrupted there is balance and health, when this energy is restricted or blocked there is often pain and illness.
* When energy starts to flow it is often felt in the body as heat, cold, tingling.

As human being and energy beings reflexology is all inclusive and equally beneficial to all that experience it. I hope this post encourages further questions about the health benefits of reflexology which I will be happy to answer by email or phone.

Herbs and Reflexology for the competitive sportsperson.

Being involved in competitive sports is a great opportunity to realise your potential as a whole person. There is nothing like a tough training session to experience where your body, mind and emotions can take you. It’s about feeling the pain and fear and pushing through in the knowing that you will enjoy the after buzz of adrenal and sense of achievement.

The sports people I work with are not professional athletes and have chosen competitive sports as a positive lifestyle choice. Their competitive edge and drive to experience their full potential, inspires me to develop herbal programmes to help them to achieve their personal sporting goals.

When I treat competitive sportspeople as a herbalist and reflexologist my goals are :

• To protect and strengthen immunity
• To develop endurance and strength of musculoskeletal system
• To prevent injury
• To build mental endurance
• To protect and strengthen the respiratory and circulatory system
• To provide optimum nutrition using plant based superfoods.
• To reduce recovery time post training and competition/ matches.

While also remembering the wisdom of the Olympic Creed 1894
“The important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight; the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well.”

There is so much to say about Nettle and its herbal uses, but today I want to focus your attention on its use as a nutritive herb here at the Hawthorn Clinic. Nettle leaf is highly nutritious, particularly in iron but also has impressive amounts of Vitamin K & C, magnesium, calcium, chromium, zinc, potassium, phosphorous and silicon. The nutritional content, particularly the iron, makes this herb an excellent support for fatigue, recovering from illness and anaemia.

I also want to mention its value as a herb to treat inflammation in the musculoskeletal system. When there is inflammation there is excessive acidity within the joints. Nettle as a diuretic herb will remove any excessive levels of heat and fluid around the joints by removing the body’s acidic metabolites through the urine. Traditionally leaves were collected in early spring and used for ‘spring clean’ detox regimes. This cleansing effect was particularly applied in European tradition in relieving arthritic joint pain and more general aches and pains. A tradition that modern day herbalist still use toady.

Chronic or long term inflammation in our joints and muscles can often compromise our immune system resulting in conditions like Rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. Nettle will balance and calm an overactive immune system. It is also important to note that Nettles perform like natural anti-histamines, calming allergic reactions, particularly in seasonal allergies such as hay fever but also in allergic skin reactions.

Garlic was used by ancient cultures in  much the same ways in which it is used today, to combat coughs, colds and infections in general. As herbalist I always remind my clients that herbs are a support system. It is a healthy balanced diet that will sustain health. If I could only pick one super food it would be Garlic all day long. From personal and clinical experience, daily use of garlic aids and supports the body in ways that no other herb can match.

It is an effective antimicrobial, acting on bacteria, viruses and parasites of the alimentary tract. The volatile oil is largely excreted via the lungs, making it useful in infections of the respiratory tract, such as acute bronchitis respiratory mucus, recurrent colds and flu. In general garlic maybe used as a preventive medicine against most infections, digestive as well as respiratory. In the digestive tract garlic acts as a prebiotic, supporting a healthy gut microbiome.

Allicin (sulphur compound) present in raw garlic is known to accelerate the liver’s ability to breakdown lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides), reducing the build of fats in the wall of the arteries and therefore helping to prevent heart disease. Garlic is known to improve our immune response to infection. It improves blood platelet count in the body and increases the levels of globulin (proteins from which antibiotics are made) and stimulates macrophage activity, the scavenger cells that destroy bacteria. To experience the true medicinal qualities of garlic it is best eaten raw and uncooked. Eat with olive oil in a dressing, or paste to reduce  burning sensation of the powerful volatile oil released on chopping or grating .

Note of caution: High dosage can irritate the intestinal mucosa causing heartburn, diarrhoea and burning of the mouth. If you suffer Colitis best start with small amounts. However a good preventive dose is 1 x clove daily .
