“I met and had two treatments with Anthony and came off a very happy and satisfied client. I would strongly recommend him”
Samuel Agyare, 16 Oct 2013
Vice Chairman, Emergency Dept, Lincoln Hospital, Bronx, NY

“I am a physician (MD 1982) with history of lumbar laminectomy surgery for severe low back pain. The surgery was performed well, however I have had persistent back pain limiting my activity. Anthony O Connor came highly recommended and after a course of three treatments I have experienced almost complete relief. Anthony is highly professional, seriously dedicated to his practice and as an experienced physician I recommend him highly without any reservation.”

N.J. Hruba, M.D., 21 Jan 2013

“We had our initial consultation with Anthony, with complains of shoulder pain and carpal tunnel for Phil, my husband, and seasickness and knee pain for myself. We scheduled appointments for both of us and after our treatments both of us felt much better .Phil’s shoulder pain was much decreased and carpal tunnel tingling was relieved significantly. I felt much better and have not felt seasick for the duration of the cruise.”

Phil and Eve Morris, 11 November 2014

“One doesn’t normally begin a diet while on a cruise; however that is exactly what occurred. Listening to Anthony on his discussion on the merits of acupuncture I discovered it might assist me with my cravings for sweets and nighttime eating. I noticed a difference after the initial treatment. Successive treatments however, brought about marked improvement. No eating after dinner and no cravings for sweets. Aside from this posture review/critique and the therapy, it must be noted that Anthony is a professional of the highest calibre.”

Bonnie Peters, R.N., M.S.A., M.S.N., November 2015
(retired chief nursing officer)
“I am a recently retired Resident Nurse with my nursing background in critical care and nursing administration. I asked many questions of Anthony, all of which I received detailed and professional replies to. I have had back surgery nearly 40 years ago and I’m reminded on a daily basis of that procedure. I just ‘learned to live with it!’ After just one acupuncture treatment the relief was instantaneous! Anthony also helped me with an ongoing frozen shoulder issue and my range of motion was greatly improved. I continued for a total of four sessions. I simply can’t say enough superlatives about this gentle kind and skilled gentleman.”

Carol Lang (retired nursing supervisor), 12 Nov 2014

“Years of wondering whether if it’d work were erased! Slouching is now uncomfortable and a straight lower back is now normal. Thank you again”

Arvo Sepp, 3 Oct 2013

“My wife and I decided to try acupuncture. Being skeptical, I agreed to three treatments. At the end of the treatments I was amazed at the results. If he was in private practice in my area he would be my acupuncturist”

Byron Benton, Jan 17 2014

“Anthony was attentive, knowledgeable, he was supportive, professional and empathic, but most importantly, he got right to the heart of the issue and began making a positive difference within minutes of meeting me”

Donna Lynne, 12 Oct 2013

“I have had acupuncture before but I felt Tony explained things to me; I was able to understand things and take home what he has taught me. So I feel this has been a very wonderful gift for myself.”

Rosa, 11 Oct 2013

“My first experience with this procedure was a delightful and relaxing experience. The little aches and pains of aging were relieved and attended to in a very professional manner. Tony is a very gifted and accomplished professional”

Dennis, 4 Oct 2013

“I would like to share my experience with my treatment from Anthony for my asthma and sugar addiction. I still ate some sweets, however I could have done without. Sugar no longer calls my name!”

Janice Horn, 31 Oct 2013

“Thanks again for your wonderful treatment which is the best acupuncture we’ve ever had. With your outgoing personality it was easy to tell you about our health problems. Monika can now lift her right arm for the first time in about a year without experiencing pain. I too have far less pain in my left lung than when you began treatment and overall feel much better. We wish you were practicing in San Diego. We hope to see you on a future HAL cruise and will recommend you to our cruising friends to look you up so they can get the best acupuncture ever.”

Tom and Monika Cook, 1 Nov 2013

“Tony provided outstanding acupuncture service on the Westerdam. He treated me for digestive issues and we made remarkable progress in a short period of time. He is a great listener and problem solver. Thanks for the help.”

Sharon, 1 Nov 2013

“I had 7 acupuncture treatments with Tony while on a 2 week cruise. It was my first time having acupuncture. I’ve been challenged with psoriasis for several years. Traditional helped to a degree. The acupuncture significantly helped. My skin is clearer than it has ever been. Additionally, my stress level has been significantly decreased. Tony has a very good manner with his patients. In addition to the acupuncture he also help0ed educate me about Chinese Medicine Nutrition and how my body works. He has made me a believer in acupuncture. Thanks Tony!”

Lindy, Nov 1 2013

“I have had five acupuncture treatments and have noticed a considerable improvement in the reduction of pain. I had complaints of hip, arm, knees, hands and other areas of pain caused by arthritis. He treated me with respect and acupuncture. I have had relief and would recommend it to anyone.”

Alice Heinbach, 22 Oct 2013

“I came onboard my first cruise with years of leg and joint pain as my constant companions. I did five treatments over the course of my cruise and I’ve had amazing results- my legs don’t hurt and my joints are vastly improved. I feel fantastic, sleeping better than ever and having a great deal more energy. Thank you!”

Linda Shelton, 27 Sep 2013

“Anthony has been a savior to me on this cruise pain-wise. I will definitely book my next cruise if he is on the ship. Thank you Anthony for such a great trip!”

Laurie Potter, 28 Nov 2013
“As a first time client of acupuncture my experience could not have been any more successful from my viewpoint. My hope for this treatment was to find some help other than surgery for knee and lower back pain from osteoarthritis. Through professional and caring techniques of the acupuncturist this was realized.”

Diane Miller, 29 Dec 2013

“I met Anthony three times during our cruise and he was wonderful! He is very professional and acupuncture is very helpful for many reasons! Anyone who is thinking of considering acupuncture should absolutely do this today. It is painless and will relieve your symptoms. Thanks to Anthony for all of your help!”

Michelle Kinder, 27 Dec 2013

“I happen to be a rather ‘complicated case’… I have had 10 car accidents! As a results I have neck and back issues for which I have received a variety of treatments over about 40 years. I had tried acupuncture several years ago for a sciatic injury and it had not gone well. However, I was eager to give acupuncture another trying having had marginal success with the treatments I had tried with traditional Western medicine. Anthony presents as kind, empathic, very skilled, knowledgeable and a very active listener. He was quickly able to integrate and understand my chronic pain issues. Anthony created a treatment plan for me which was executed over five treatments. I wish it were an option to continue with Anthony! However, I finished the treatments and will return home with jou Chinese herbs and written recommendations to continue on my path to better health. This was an excellent experience!”

Hi all, I was on the Therapeutic Astrology Podcast recently talking about Chinese medicine approaches to trauma, the psycho-emotional aspects of herbal formulas, practicalities of applying multiple diagnostic and treatment approaches and non-pathologising of illnesses. If you're on a long drive somewhere give it a listen! I'm fascinated by the aspects of health that exist outside of our own bodies and minds. Evolutionary Astrology provides great insight into these so I really enjoyed the conversation with Mannah. Also available on all podcast platforms.

Meet Anthony O’Connor for a wonderful conversation about Nature-Based Healing. This is a must-hear episode. Anthony is an East Asian medicine practitioner, w...

Feng Chi - “Wind Pool”. Usually pronounced with a Beijing accent, (‘Feng Chi’r)
One of my favourite acupoints. Clears Heat from the eyes and upper body, anchors and expels Wind (as its name would suggest) making it a great choice for early onset febrile diseases. Its close proximity to the Sea of Marrow (brain) lends itself to treatment of brain fog and stroke, and its position between the origins of the SCM and trapezius muscles give it an unparalleled ability to treat neck and shoulder stiffness. My Tuina teacher maintained that in addressing headache, regardless of the location of the pain, half of the treatment should involve working on Feng Chi.
I’m not a fan of covering individual herbs or acupoints in isolation because it doesn’t reflect how we actually treat. Diagnosis and point / herb combinations are the core of Chinese medicine, not any one acupoint. But I found this photo on my phone which I think highlights Feng Chi nicely, so I felt like writing a little love letter to it. Another reason for my affection is perhaps because it’s not a point I can see or use on my own body!
A few months back while being quite run down I developed a nasty case of shingles on my neck, right along the Shaoyang (the meridian Feng Chi belongs to). It was inflamed (Heat) painful (Heat in the Blood) and itchy (Wind) and located directly inferior to Feng Chi. I wanted nothing more than to be able needle that point, knowing the kind of relief it could give, having used it to benefit hundreds of patients in my own practice… but I couldn’t. (There’s probably a lesson there about the limitations of self-treatment)
In the end I prepared some quadruple-strength herbs for myself and thankfully the pain subsided within about 36 hours. But during that initial onset, while sitting there in acute discomfort, I truly understood the value of this point.
Thanks to for modelling

Hi everyone. As some of ye might know I haven’t practiced acupuncture much since moving to Clare. Looking for a clinic space really brought home how important it is for both patients and practitioner to work in the right environment. I’m delighted to say that after several month’s search I’ve found what I think is the ideal spot to practice in lovely Corofin. I’ll be working out of a renovated townhouse in The Glebe, opposite St Pat’s Hall.
For those who don’t know me, I’ve been practicing for the past twelve years, successfully treating a range of conditions with all the tools available to Chinese medicine. Acupucture’s ability to treat pain (particularly chronic or nerve pain) is well-documented and forms a large part of my practice, but aside from this I have a particular interest in menstrual health, digestive conditions, sleep disorders, skin problems and Long Covid (in all its myriad manifestations). On a more mental-emotional level, if you’re doing a lot of inner work acupuncture can be a great assistant in somatic releasing, as well as directly supporting other modalities.
The treatments I offer are acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, tuina (Chinese medical massage), cupping and moxibustion, depending on the condition.
My initial patient intake is 75 mins, with subsequent treatments timed at 60 mins. Typically I like to work with patients for 3 - 9 treatments. Some people respond more quickly and some need more long-term support. As a practitioner I want to be an advocate for my patient’s health and see them on a measurable and sustainable path to wellness by the time our work is concluded.
My ideal patients are those suffering from intractable conditions, unexplained or poorly-diagnosed illnesses, or a complex of symptoms that they’re looking to untangle. I often see patients who respond very quickly to treatment but I’m particularly drawn to the more complex work; threading our way through a condition like someone untangling Christmas lights (leading to a hopefully equally celebratory conclusion).
I will be taking patients every Thursday starting on the 16th of this month and can be contacted here or at 0860291414.
Finally, thank you to Nadaa of .ie for connecting me with the awesome and this clinic space. And to for being my Insta-post photographer

‘What herbs are good for my immune system?’
This is a common question, and one that doesn’t have a clear answer in Chinese medicine. Firstly, what people mean by ‘immune system’ isn’t always clear, and secondly it varies depending on presentation and circumstances.
If there is a bug going around that you want to resist we normally prescribe formulas that are a mix of herbs that benefit the Interior (your overall health) while Releasing the Exterior, expelling any pathogens that may find their way to you.
However, if you are in the early stages of fighting a sniffle, then the focus shifts purely towards Expelling the Pathogen with acrid, dispersing herbs. While this is an effective strategy it’s not appropriate to use long-term, as over time these herbs can deplete the patient, given their focus on fighting and Expelling Pathogens.
Finally, if the person is looking to support their immune system because they’re experiencing repeated issues of the respiratory system (e.g. recurrent chest or sinus infections), the focus then shifts towards regulating the Lung organ. Of course, we never treat in isolation in Chinese medicine, so regulating the Lung will usually involve regulating other internal organs as well.
This isn’t to say that Chinese medicine doesn’t treat the ‘immune system’, but rather that its approach is more subtle, time-dependent, circumstances-dependent and presentation-dependent. These three presentations are not mutually-exclusive either; the versatility of our formula construction allows us to mix, match and modify as needed for our patient, even taking things like the change of seasons into account.

“When should I see a practitioner?”
I’ve brought in a special guest to help me with this video. Last week Katie asked me a few questions about the right time to contact a therapist, ie when in acute need or when feeling better. But she also had other questions, relating to how practitioners manage a patient load and their own mental and physical health. I’m familiar with the first question as I hear it quite commonly, but the others revealed a way that patients might be thinking that had never occurred to me before. Katie kindly agreed to appear on camera to help me discuss these questions in todays quick video.
