MRSA blood stream infection is a notifiable disease, but MRSA infections in the bone, wounds or respiratory are not, and we need to have a complete picture. Please let us know if there is something you want included on the Web Site, or if you have any information or news you want to share. SIN is a registered charity, and all funds donated will be used for the ongoing research projects which are intended to further infection prevention and control in this country, and also to improve the conditions of those who have suffered from such infections. All our workers are volunteers who give their time and talents free.

Super bugs Cost NHS £10 Million in Compensation

The National Health Service has paid out just over ten million pounds in compensation, to patients infected with hospital super bugs such as MRSA and C. difficile.

The Sun newspaper is reporting that ninety three successful claims were handled by the NHS Litigation Authority last year alone, resulting in an average pay out of £70,000 per claim.

A spokesperson from Patient Concern, a campaign group for users of health services, stated that NHS funds were just being thrown down the drain, adding that if high compensation costs could be linked to low cleaning bills, then the message might begin to sink in.

An experienced medical negligence solicitor said that many claims were made because patients wanted an apology and an explanation of how they had been infected, not just financial recompense.

Simon Burns the cabinets Health Minister stated that incidences of MRSA had been reduced by twenty nine percent over the last year and cases of C. difficile had been reduced by seventeen percent.

However he went on to say that the NHS needed to adopt a zero tolerance attitude to avoidable infection.

This is a very serious situation. Hygiene inspections were instigated when patient groups like ourselves brought the attention of the Minister and the public to the very high level of Health Care Acquired infections in Irish hospitals. Even when there were regular inspections, the level of infections was still unacceptably high and people were dying and going unreported. But at least there was public awareness and hygiene audits. So, what is going to happen now? Should we keep our mouths shut an
