Plantar Fasciitis,
"The dreadful First Steps of the Day".

People suffering with Plantar Fasciitis will always talk of those dreaded first steps of the day. That's when they will experience that burning, sharpe excruciating pain as they hobble about for several minutes until they can eventually walk with a reduction in the discomfort, as the muscles of the calf and feet warm up. Walking down a stairs would be a real struggle and would have to be done with great care.
Plantar pain was recently described to me, like walking on sharpe stones or broken glass.
It is certainly not the nicest way to start the day, and it always amazes me why people will continue to struggle with this horrible condition for weeks, even months without seeking help.
There is really no need to continue suffering with this Plantar pain, this condition can be treated with great results using massage, combined with stretching of the calf muscles and plantar surface of the feet.
While there are many different causes that contribute to the condition eg flat feet, high arches, unsupportive footwear,to name just a few, it is most important to have the muscles of the lower leg and feet worked on, as there is always tauntness in these areas. This hands on work must be always carried out during a treatment.
I also when necessary use suction cupping with vacuum to help reduce tightness in the calf and in the plantar surface of the feet this greatly helps to reduce tautness and inflammation to the area of concern. Ankle joint mobility may also need to be worked on as restricted ankle joint movement may place stress to the Achilles tendon and plantar surface.
It is most important to have Plantar Fasciitis treated in its early stages, as treatment may take a little longer when the condition is allowed become chronic.

Des McGann.
“The Real Special One”

It’s hard to believe that on this weekend 53 years ago a young man from Kiltale represented Ireland in the marathon at the Olympic games in Munich. Where has that time gone. We haven’t had too many athletes from the Royal county that has graced the stage of the greatest sports event in the World, so that is why I have always felt this wonderful athlete should be held in the highest esteem.
Back in the 70”s taking part in the Olympic games was totally different then what it is nowadays Irish athletes would have had to raise the vast amount of the financial costs themselves, unless of course you were from The US or one the the Eastern bloc countries they were greatly funded by their governments.
Luckily Dessie had great support from the wonderful people of Kiltale and neighbouring parishes Dunsany, Killmessan and further afield.
That Olympic trip would take 6 weeks in total so that would place some financial pressure on any young athlete.
The Olympic Games of 1972 will forever be remembered by the terrorist attack on Israel’s athletes. ( 11 athletes, 5 terrorists and one police officer were killed) . At one stage the remaining events were going to be cancelled but eventually went ahead. So it was not ideal preparation for athletes taking part in the last event on the Sunday the marathon. Apart from that the Olympic village and Stadium became a police and army fortress not an ideal situation to be in just before the biggest race of your life.
Dessie himself was suffering with a bad head cold on the morning of the race and he didn’t take to the food in the Olympic village ( he missed Mary’s great cooking) and I’m sure he missed his pre race ritual the night before a race, the few pints of Guinness.
Race day was hot and it was really tough going but Dessie finished just in over 2 hours 28 mins,
An incredible time when you consider all that had happened only 5 days before.
One of the highlights of those games for Dessie was making friends with the legendary Steve Prefontaine, the American long distance runner, a real icon, coached by Bill Bowerman founder of Nike, only 21 in Munich Steve was tragically killed 3 years later in a car accident.
Someone asked me recently what time would Dessie have ran if he was racing today.
With His PB was 2 hours 16 minutes in Athlone 1972, I would have no hesitation in saying that wearing the super shoes of today, Garmin watch, energy drinks and gels on a fast flat course like Berlin, sub 2 hours 10 mins all day long.
It’s always such a pleasure to meet and chat with this great athlete, sadly my last meeting was at his brother Vincent’s funeral ( rest in peace Vinny ) but he looked well and was still in great shape for a man of his years.
I hope on Sunday you will have a few pints of the black stuff and remember that great day in 72
Your a legend and always will be Dessie McGann
Thanks for all the great memories.

Plantar fasciitis.
“ When you just can’t walk “

Believe me, you never want to suffer with this horrible condition, not at any time. It is simply pure agony, from that dreadful first step of the day, even continuing to be felt right through out the day. It can be pure hell.
Funny how some people simply continue hobbling around as if they are walking on small sharp stones hoping by some miracle the pain and discomfort will just vanish. Sadly that seldom ever happens.
It’s most important to have Plantar Fasciitis treated in its earliest stages as if it is let become a chronic condition then it becomes a little harder to treat.
Proper assessment/ treatment, home care exercises and by wearing proper supportive footwear will in the vast majority of cases greatly reduce Plantar Fasciitis symptoms.
There is simply no need to continue suffering with this horrible condition, have it treated.

Flying the flag for trim athletic club tomorrow in Larne. One of the fastest half marathons in Europe. I’ll need every bit of help that I can get.
Front of the field will full of Kenyan gentlemen.
I might get to see them at the start. They will be home and hosed before I cross the finish line.
If I could only turn back the clock 30 years. Ah well I can always dream.

With Plantar fasciitis,
Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.

It always amazes me when I hear just how long people have lived day to day suffering with foot pain. How they are prepared to go through the daily morning ritual of struggling to walk after getting out of bed, the dreaded first steps of the day until they can eventually hobble about in pain and maybe after some time when the ligaments, tendons and calf muscles start to warm up with increased blood flow, they can walk again, not pain free but it becomes a little easier. But why go through all that pain and discomfort in the first place. Plantar fasciitis can be treated successfully and with various stretches kept at bay.
But it’s most important to have the condition treated in its early stages, it’s becomes so much harder to treat when it’s allowed become a chronic condition.
What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Inflammation of the plantar fascia ( the ligament at the bottom of the foot where it attaches to the heel pad) caused through micro tears by excessive impact or stress to the area.

What can cause Plantar Fasciitis.

Excessive walking or running.
Wearing improper unsupported foot wear.
Standing for long periods on hard surfaces.
Excessive over pronation ( foot arch needing support to be properly aligned)
Tight calf muscles.
Reduced range of motion in the ankle joint and toes.

With proper care and by wearing proper footwear the vast majority of the causes of this horrible condition can be eradicated.

In my treatment of plantar fasciitis I will always realise tautness in the calf muscles, Achilles tendons and to the muscles, ligaments of the feet and then if necessary work to help increase range of motion in the ankle joint, this work I find is essential when treating the condition.
But it’s most important that all this work is enhanced by the person suffering with plantar fasciitis makes sure to do the home care exercises daily, this is most important, I cannot stress its importance enough.
I will always recommend that people who have suffered with foot issues may need to up date their footwear especially if they are doing lots of walking or running. I would always highly recommend that they have a gait analysis done so they will then start wearing proper supportive shoes for their foot type.
We are blessed to now have a specialist running shop in Navan called Radical Runner on Watergate street that does gait analysis using state of the art equipment. It’s a shop with highly experienced specialised staff that will let you know the best shoe for your foot type.

So it’s not all doom and gloom there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There’s no need to continue suffering with horrible foot pain have it treated, take the first step, feel free to call me

It’s funny how people will notice your change in attitude towards them, but they never seem to notice it just might be their behaviour that made you change your attitude in the first place.

Plantar Fasciitis,
"Those of dreaded First Steps of the Day".

People suffering with Plantar Fasciitis will always talk of those painful first steps of the day. That's when they will really experience that burning, sharpe excruciating pain as they hobble about for several minutes until they can eventually walk with a reduction in the discomfort, as the muscles of the calf and feet warm up. Walking down a stairs would be a real struggle and would have to be done with great care.
Plantar pain was recently described to me, like walking on sharpe stones on a beach.
It is certainly not the nicest way to start the day, and it always amazes me why people will continue to struggle with the condition for weeks, even months without seeking help.
There is really no need to continue suffering with this Plantar pain, this condition can be treated with great results using massage, combined with stretching of the calf muscles and plantar surface of the feet.
While there are many different causes that contribute to the condition eg flat feet, high arches, unsupportive footwear, it is most important to have the muscles of the lower leg and feet worked on, as there is always tauntness in these areas. This hands on work must be always carried out during a treatment, if the issue is to be resolved, but it is equally important that the client makes sure to do home care exercises to further enhance the treatment.
I will always advise clients to make sure to wear proper supportive footwear as this can be a real game changer. Too many of us wear unsupportive shoes in the summer months and this can cause stress to the plantar surface of the feet.
I also use suction cupping with vacuum to help reduce tightness in the calf and in the surface of the foot, and I have found excellent results are achieved when using this form of therapy.
It is most important to have Plantar Fasciitis treated in its early stages, as treatment may take longer if the condition is allowed become chronic.
