Irish Life Dublin City marathon 2025

I’m not a betting man, but I’m 💯 sure we won’t have a Meath man on the podium come lunchtime Sunday. Gone are the days when we could almost guarantee that Tommy Maher from the great Dunshaughlin athletic club would finish at the front of the field. As the song went, “those were the days my friends, we thought they’d never end” but like all good things they have long gone, it was great to be part of them.

"Our Feet, the workhorses of our bodies,
So treat them with a little kindness”

We all have experienced pain and discomfort with our feet, that feeling of pain and extreme discomfort from a simple blister to suffering with some of the more serious foot condtions such as Plantar faciitis, achilles tendonitis, morton's neuroma,
It is only when we experience foot pain and discomfort that we really start to appreciate just how important our feet really are.
We are all gulity of taken our feet so much for granted, they're just there at the end of our legs, having to put up everday with so many challenges, walking, standing, running, carrying around our body weight. At the start of the day we squeeze them into really tight fitting shoes, with really narrow toeboxes, sometimes with unnaturally elevated heels, to the flat shoes with such little support to the muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones of the feet.
While our poor feet have to suffer with those indignities, we then expect them to take hundreds of tons of force impact during the average day of walking. All that pounding really helps to explain why feet are the body part must likely to get injured.
Our feet should never hurt, ever, it is up to each and everyone one of us to look after our feet,
There is so much we can do that wil help improve the condtion of our feet and help prevent foot injury.
For example by making changes to the type of shoes we wear, we can allow our feet feet to walk in a natural gait, that one change we make can greatly reduce the risk of foot injuries.
Wider toe boxes will help to reduce bunions, give more room to the toes, helping to prevent nerve compression, to help protect the achilles tendon from shortening, alternate heel heights regularly.
Yes there will be times when we will suffer with foot pain and condtions that has been caused with other issues out of our control, but it is so important that once we start to feel foot pain, that we have it assesed and treated as soon as possible.
Sharp pain felt in the heel or arch of the foot will only worsen overtime if left untreated.
Unfortunatley the vast majority of us will continue to suffer in pain and discomfort hoping that the pain we are feeling will just like magic, suddenly vanish. It seldom if ever does, if foot pain is not effectively treated, the
condtion may become even more serious, greatly increading both treatment and recovery time.
Our feet have thousands of nerve endings, so they are highly sensitive, so they will very quickly let us know when something is wrong.
Never ignore foot pain, have it treated as soon as possible, there is no need to continue suffering pain and discomfort.
Our feet are so important to each and everyone of us, please look after them.

Stress/ Anxiety.

"We carry the Weight of the World on our Shoulder's."

The vast majority of us will experience neck, shoulder and upper back pain at some stage in our lives. That pain and discomfort can be really debilitating and start to really impact on our daily lives.
From having severe headaches, to feeling real discomfort due to muscle stiffness in the neck and shoulders that can get so bad it eventually leads to people not been able to even turn their heads with that extreme pain, muscle stiffness that can gets so tight /taut it may eventually lead to feelings of numbness and tingling in the hands and fingers.
Simple daily tasks like driving a car, become impossible to do as people can' t even turn their heads to check for oncoming traffic, so it would be unsafe drive. Neck / shoulder pain can also prevent people sleeping, as it becomes so uncomfortable to try to sleep on a pillow due to neck and shoulder pain.
While neck, shoulder back pain can be caused by injury due to falls, car accidents or even due to strains in muscles and ligaments, the pain i am talking about today is as a result of living daily with stress/ anxiety helping to cause extreme tension in the upper body.
When we have to live daily with lots of stress and anxiety, it is really common to suffer with neck, shoulder and upper back pain.
An area of the upper back, neck and shoulders is even called the dreaded tension triangle.
Tension loves to live in this space and will often make its presence know to us when we least expect.
While our bodies can deal with short term anxiety / stress, dealing with excessive stress and anxiety now thats a different matter,
either way ,our bodies will always recognize that real threat lurking in the back ground and will then try to give us a wake - up call.
Some of the warning symptoms eg headaches,
neck pain, mild discomfort in the shoulders and we may even start to feel some back pain.
If we continue to ignore these warning symptoms and just carry on day to day, hoping that in time these symptoms will just go away, we are making a mistake, a really big mistake.
Eventually all the muscles in the neck, shoulders and upper back will become shortened and get really stiff. Suddenly we start to experience really serious pain and discomfort in the neck, shoulders and upper back.
Muscles in the neck and jaw suddenly become so tense that blood flow to the head and scalp is constricted it can eventually cause severe headaches. Is there a worse feeling than having to deal with a severe headache?
Well maybe a toothache or earache can be as bad, but it is such a horrible feeling, is it not?
Muscles in the chest, shoulders and neck become so tight and taut, that they can cause compression to nerves, leading to numbness and tingling in the hands/ fingers.
If this tightness in the muscles is not reduced
these condtions will greatly increase and simply become unbearable.
The good news is that neck, shoulder and upper back muscle stiffness/ tautness can be effectively treated and reduced using massage
therapy.
I love to help people suffering with neck, shoulder and upper body pain using a combination of massage, suction cupping and stretching, it is wonderful to see the change in a person who is in real discomfort at the start of a treatment, as they start to feel pain reduction both during and at the end of a session. Even their facail expression changes from the start to finish of the treatment, pain greatly reduced and a great weight lifted off their shoulders.
There will also be great improvement in range of motion of the arms, and turning the head will be so much easier, with reduced discomfort when doing so.
So my advice today is , when people start to feel an increase in tension in the upper shoulders, neck and upper back, in that area know as the tension triangle, have it treated.
Getting bodywork or massage done on a regular basis is one of the best ways to permanently get rid of tension in the area and help to prevent it building up again.
Our bodies are simply amazing and they will
let us know when something is not just right.
Listen to your body and always take good care of it.

Plantar fasciitis.
“Been able to walk pain free is a real blessing”

It is only after people have experienced that horrible pain when they try to walk after getting out of bed or after sitting for a while, only then will they fully appreciate that wonderful feeling when they can walk again pain free in comfort. We really need to start appreciating just how amazing our feet are and just how much we depend on them every day.
With all the work we put them through it’s no real surprise to me when I treat foot pain to find that the ankle joints and metatarsal joints are all restricted with greatly restricted movement between the bones.
That to me is why it’s so important when treating any foot pain, that all the fascia including calf muscles, Achilles tendons. ankle, metatarsal and toes has to be realised to make sure the foot can perform all its tasks correctly without any restrictions.
So make sure to look after them, never ignore foot pain, pain is the body’s way of telling us something is not right. Have the issue dealt with and don’t allow it to become a chronic condition.
There is always a reason we feel pain in our feet, it just doesn’t suddenly appear out of nowhere.
It can be caused by so many different issues,
So it’s important to have it assessed and treated, the sooner the better.

Athlone half marathon.

That’s a definite wrap for me, 2025 road racing done and dusted, I’m being put out to pasture on the hill of Tara for the winter now.
A great year thank God,every race completed, I can’t ask for anymore than that.
I was delighted to run today for the first time with my nephew Robert ( with the beard)and his mate Bobby. Not easy for an old man trying to keep up with the youngsters. Fair play to ye both. Roll on Donade half in January if the man above spares me.

Plantar fasciitis.
“.There’s no miracle cure or quick fix remedy”

If only there was a cure for this horrible condition, the start of each new day would be for so many pain free, no need anymore to spend so much time hobbling about in sheer agony. Would that not feel so much better.
No miracle cure but the good news is that plantar fasciitis can be treated and with proper home care exercises can be prevented from reoccurring.
What causes Plantar fasciitis?
Wearing unsupportive shoes ( without support at the back of the heel)
Wearing shoes with memory foam, which will overtime cause the muscles and ligaments of the feet to become weak.
Increasing distance, walking or running too soon.
Tight calf and tibialis posterior muscles.
Fixated ankle joints and tautness between the metatarsal bones
Flat feet, high arches. Too name but a few.
So with proper assessment, followed by effective treatment, home care exercises and if necessary changing footwear, (that is well supportive footwear) this horrible condition can be effectively treated.
The earlier this condition is treated, the easier is is to treat. When Plantar Fasciitis is allowed to become a chronic condition. Then it takes longer to achieve positive results.
It is also important that even when the issue has been resolved that the exercises to help strengthen the muscles and ligaments of the feet are used regularly to make sure it doesn’t ever return. Just a few minutes each day that’s all it takes.

Plantar Fasciitis,
"The dreadful First Steps of the Day".

People suffering with Plantar Fasciitis will always talk of those dreaded first steps of the day. That's when they will experience that burning, sharpe excruciating pain as they hobble about for several minutes until they can eventually walk with a reduction in the discomfort, as the muscles of the calf and feet warm up. Walking down a stairs would be a real struggle and would have to be done with great care.
Plantar pain was recently described to me, like walking on sharpe stones or broken glass.
It is certainly not the nicest way to start the day, and it always amazes me why people will continue to struggle with this horrible condition for weeks, even months without seeking help.
There is really no need to continue suffering with this Plantar pain, this condition can be treated with great results using massage, combined with stretching of the calf muscles and plantar surface of the feet.
While there are many different causes that contribute to the condition eg flat feet, high arches, unsupportive footwear,to name just a few, it is most important to have the muscles of the lower leg and feet worked on, as there is always tauntness in these areas. This hands on work must be always carried out during a treatment.
I also when necessary use suction cupping with vacuum to help reduce tightness in the calf and in the plantar surface of the feet this greatly helps to reduce tautness and inflammation to the area of concern. Ankle joint mobility may also need to be worked on as restricted ankle joint movement may place stress to the Achilles tendon and plantar surface.
It is most important to have Plantar Fasciitis treated in its early stages, as treatment may take a little longer when the condition is allowed become chronic.

“The Real Special One”

It’s hard to believe that on this weekend 53 years ago a young man from Kiltale represented Ireland in the marathon at the Olympic games in Munich. Where has that time gone. We haven’t had too many athletes from the Royal county that has graced the stage of the greatest sports event in the World, so that is why I have always felt this wonderful athlete should be held in the highest esteem.
Back in the 70”s taking part in the Olympic games was totally different then what it is nowadays Irish athletes would have had to raise the vast amount of the financial costs themselves, unless of course you were from The US or one the the Eastern bloc countries they were greatly funded by their governments.
Luckily Dessie had great support from the wonderful people of Kiltale and neighbouring parishes Dunsany, Killmessan and further afield.
That Olympic trip would take 6 weeks in total so that would place some financial pressure on any young athlete.
The Olympic Games of 1972 will forever be remembered by the terrorist attack on Israel’s athletes. ( 11 athletes, 5 terrorists and one police officer were killed) . At one stage the remaining events were going to be cancelled but eventually went ahead. So it was not ideal preparation for athletes taking part in the last event on the Sunday the marathon. Apart from that the Olympic village and Stadium became a police and army fortress not an ideal situation to be in just before the biggest race of your life.
Dessie himself was suffering with a bad head cold on the morning of the race and he didn’t take to the food in the Olympic village ( he missed Mary’s great cooking) and I’m sure he missed his pre race ritual the night before a race, the few pints of Guinness.
Race day was hot and it was really tough going but Dessie finished just in over 2 hours 28 mins,
An incredible time when you consider all that had happened only 5 days before.
One of the highlights of those games for Dessie was making friends with the legendary Steve Prefontaine, the American long distance runner, a real icon, coached by Bill Bowerman founder of Nike, only 21 in Munich Steve was tragically killed 3 years later in a car accident.
Someone asked me recently what time would Dessie have ran if he was racing today.
With His PB was 2 hours 16 minutes in Athlone 1972, I would have no hesitation in saying that wearing the super shoes of today, Garmin watch, energy drinks and gels on a fast flat course like Berlin, sub 2 hours 10 mins all day long.
It’s always such a pleasure to meet and chat with this great athlete, sadly my last meeting was at his brother Vincent’s funeral ( rest in peace Vinny ) but he looked well and was still in great shape for a man of his years.
I hope on Sunday you will have a few pints of the black stuff and remember that great day in 72
Your a legend and always will be Dessie McGann
Thanks for all the great memories.
