Mom doesn’t exist in photos.
She just doesn’t.
She’s either the one taking the picture, or someone was about to take it,
but newborn cries filled the room, and her baby needed to be fed,
but one of her children needed to use the bathroom, and she rushed her out of the pool, sopping wet,
but one of her children got frosting all over his clothes, and she needed to help change him to minimize the mess.
And maybe she doesn’t want to be in the photo because she “hates” the way she looks right now.
Or she deletes it because it’s a “terrible picture.” One where she’s at the right angle, where she has three chins, and her hair is crazy.
But pictures aren’t supposed to capture perfection,
they’re supposed to capture real moments.
Moments we want our children to see when they’re looking back on their childhood memories,
so they know we were there together,
baking cookies,
swimming in the pool,
laughing, smiling,
and enjoying each other’s company.
We show up everywhere for our children, but it's time we're more intentional about showing up in photos.
Because it does matter.
We won’t always be with them,
but that photo
