Excited to share I will be running a block of group play therapy sessions again this Summer ☀️

Is your child starting “Big school” in September and feeling anxious about the transition?
I will be holding a play therapy group for a 6 week period to support children in navigating this transition.

The sessions will explore feelings of anxiety as well starting big school, through play and creative arts.

The group will be held by a qualified play therapist, who has experience working in early years. Yvonne will create a safe and welcoming space for the children to explore feelings and make new connections and friendships.

This will be small group setting. Spaces are limited to ensure the therapist can provide a safe space to all the children taking part.

Contact Yvonne for more information & if you have any questions!

Boundaries play such an important role in supporting children in building secure attachments and relationships right from their early childhood years to their adult life

Children look to their care givers to create healthy boundaries and make the big decisions 💫 While offering choice to children is important to support their autonomy, there are times when clear boundaries need to be set by the adult.

How does this look in the context of play therapy?
Boundaries within the play therapy space are limited and only implemented to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the child & therapist within the space. These safe limits support the child in building trust with the therapist. They see we are consistent. We mean what we say and we stick to it which is what contributes to them building trust in the therapeutic relationship 💞

January in a nutshell 🥰
My first month being fully self employed 🤭 January consisted of lots of parental consultations for new clients as I began working with a charity offering play therapy to children 💞 As well as client reviews for current clients.. paperwork .. followed by lots of coffee 🫣 and most importantly lots of meaningful play 💞🧸

In non-directive play therapy, the therapist doesn’t lead the play, the child does.

This isn’t a lack of structure.
It’s a deliberate therapeutic choice.

When children are free to choose how they play, they show us what matters most to them.
They gain a sense of control, safety, and trust often for the first time.

Being non-directive allows the child to do the work they’re ready for, at their own pace 💞

✨ Toys you’ll find in the playroom ✨
As children settle into the space, they naturally gravitate toward toys and materials that help them explore their experiences and express their feelings 💞 These are just some of the ways play can support them in that process. The possibilities are endless 💫

Many parents often have questions around what takes place in the sessions themselves and how they can support their child in working through challenging times. Grab a cupán tae and get reading 🤗

1. The play room 🧸
The play therapy space is set up with the child in mind, to create a safe comfortable space filled with materials that have been carefully chosen and each have a specific purpose in the play room.

2. Child led play 🎨
Play therapy is non directive which allows the child to direct their session and freely choose from the materials available. The child may use materials in the room to “act out” scenarios, describe feelings and express emotions through the play.
3. The play therapist✨
The role of the therapist is to create and hold a space safe for the child to play out these feelings and emotions. They may reflect feelings, name emotions and mirror play. When necessary the therapist may use some directive pieces to support the child with their process
4. Consistency 💪
It’s important that the child attends their appointment each week to build consistency. Consistency builds trust, helping the child feel safe to explore bigger feelings over time.
Play therapy allows children to explore feelings, emotions and experiences they may not have the words to describe. It gives them the space to work through challenges such as anxiety, loss, trauma and many more!

Over time children learn emotional regulation, confidence, and coping strategies ❤️‍🩹

As little ones head back to preschool or school, separation anxiety can sneak in—for them and for us. 😥
Here are a few gentle ways to support your child’s transition:
👋 Keep goodbyes short & sweet
A consistent, calm goodbye routine builds trust.
You leave—and you come back. 💫
📚 Read stories about school & separation
Books can help your child understand their feelings and feel less alone.
🧸 Offer a comfort item
A small toy, family photo, or note in their pocket can bring big comfort during the day.
💗 Stay calm & confident
Your energy matters. Your reassurance tells them: “You’re safe. You’ve got this.”
🌱 Transitions take time—go gently.
You’re not alone, and you’re doing an amazing job 💛
