Avoidance in Teenagers: What is behind the Door That Won’t Open?

Avoidance is not laziness or defiance, it is often a signal of overwhelm, anxiety, or fear of failure.

Whether it is school refusal, social withdrawal, or emotional shutdown, teens may be protecting themselves the only way they know how.

💡 What can parents do to help?
• Stay curious, not confrontational
• Validate their feelings without rushing to fix
• Create low-pressure opportunities for connection
• Support small steps forward, not giant leaps
• Model calm and self-regulation during stressful moments

Avoidance is a message, let’s learn to listen with contact, connection and compassion, respond with care.
