🙌 Every child deserves a champion! This person might be their parent, grandparent or other special relative…It could also be a teacher, a counselor or a coach that is that child’s encourager and motivator.

✨Don’t underestimate the power of connection and how much of a difference you can make in a child’s life.

✨Every child deserves to have people in their lives who connect with them, who believe in them, who support them, who see their strengths, who celebrate them and cheer them on…encouraging and motivating them to create goals and dreams and reach for the stars!

🌞This is so important for a child’s growth, self-esteem, and mental health.

Going to Secondary Schools can be challenging. I always recommend to parents to buy a lock from a local hardware to help eliminate stress from figuring combination code locks. Having the opportunity to practice before starting school can really help.

Have a look at this youtube video as a visual aid to the locks (I found the clip link from Killina Presentation Schools Webpage

generational trauma or experiences...

A powerful and illuminating image for understanding intergenerational trauma.

Recent research suggests that trauma can be passed down through learned behavior and also epigenetics. I will post links to research in the comments.

When I look at this image it all makes sense to me.

Inside our grandmother’s womb was our mother, and our mother’s eggs (which would one day become us) were fully formed by 4 months gestation.

Fascinating to think about, but it also explains why some of us may have symptoms of trauma without having lived through (outside the womb) any direct traumatic experiences.

Knowing this can help to stop the blame and shame we give to ourselves, and increase emotional well-being.

It also doesn’t mean we are doomed to suffer forever. When we know the truth of our lives we can find the help we need. Self-awareness brings the potential to heal, rethink our behavior, and how we navigate relationships.

So alot of adults and kids would hear me talk of our upstairs and downstairs brain. This image is exactly what I talk about... have look...

My new infographic to help parents and teachers. Share away!

I first learned of the descriptors "the upstairs and downstairs brain" when I read the Whole-Brain Child (Siegel, Bryson, 2012). The premise is simple and brilliant. The downstairs of a traditional house is where all of our basic needs are met. There’s a bathroom, a kitchen and a living area. Similarly, the “downstairs brain” is responsible for basic functions like breathing and heart rate, as well as sensory processing and sensing threat.

The upstairs brain is our more sophisticated, "thinking" brain. It's not fully developed until our mid 20s! We must be able to access both our upstairs and downstairs brain. We need to be able to monitor the sensory input coming from our environment, think and problem-solve. When our kids are having a hard time, they’re in their “downstairs” brain. They can’t access their “thinking” brain, and no amount of yelling, threatening or punishment is going to get them there.

How do you help a child when they are in their downstairs brain? First, lower expectations. Help them get regulated. That could be as simple as a hug or just being present. Once regulated, only then they can head upstairs.

Next time your child is having hard time, say to yourself “downstairs brain”. It’s a great reminder in the heat of the moment to lead with empathy.

In those moments when our child is having a meltdown, we sometimes ask ourselves, why are they choosing to behave in this way? Instead we should ask ourselves, what are they trying to tell me?

Behaviour is communication. When our children are at their most challenging, they are usually trying to tell us what they don’t have the words, or the emotional language, to express. Looking underneath the behaviour can help us to connect, empathise and understand them better.
