Today marks one year since we received the devastating news of the passing of Paddy Dunican. Paddy was a founding member of our club in 2015 and served as Vice President from 2022-2023, taking chain of office as President in 2023. A tireless and dedicated volunteer, he especially made his mark with our annual road safety campaign, elevating it to national status. He was instrumental in our community led submission to the third national strategy on Domestic, Sexual and Gender Based Violence and in the Ambassador Programme for tourism in the region. First and foremost he was a friend to many. Paddy enjoyed making high-level networking connections but he lived for the close friendships he forged with people. He is deeply missed by all in our club.
That best portion of a good man's life, his little nameless unremembered acts of kindness and of love. — William Wordsworth

Founders Friday 2025 #2 with Rotarian Dominic Doheny. What a privilege it was to listen to the story of one of the midlands’ most accomplished business leaders in Eugene Kelly's. The fireside chat with Dominic Doheny, Managing Director of John Flanagan Developments and a past-President of the Construction Industry Federation also featured Rotarian Ronan Berry as Master of Ceremony for the evening. It proved to be a stunning exploration of business resilience and diversification, high performing team building and business, community and self leadership. The sold out event is organised by David Gleeson and the team in Allpro Recruitment and we were delighted to welcome District Governor Rotary Ireland Seamus Parle to visit our club. Fellow Rotarian Tony McCormack TD was also in attendance as was Tom Doyle, our speaker from last months event. On the evening, club President Breda Colgan was delighted to present a cheque for €1,000 to teams from Sacred Heart School Tullamore and Colaiste Choilm to their VEX Robotics teams as they prepare to represent the county at the world finals in Dallas next month.

An Athlone student representing Rotary Club of Athlone has been selected as the zone final winner for this year’s prestigious Rotary Youth Leadership Development Competition. The final was hosted by Tullamore & District Rotary Club. The competition, which is one of Rotary International's longest running youth projects, rewards young people with clear leadership potential based on their extra-curricular activities. It is run in conjunction with the EU Parliament office in Dublin and Euroscola in Strasbourg.
Maeve Murphy who is a Transition Year student in Athlone was announced as the winner after facing the judging panel in the boardroom of Salutem Advisory & Training Ltd, Tullamore. Gabriel Landmark representing Rotary Club of Newbridge Newbridge was the runner up on the night.
The finalists were interviewed on subjects including topical issues in Europe, community and environmental issues locally, nationally and internationally and leadership. In addition, their knowledge of Rotary and the future of the European Union was tested.
The independent judging panel was chaired by Andrea Scally of Allpro Recruitment and included Sgt. Graham Kavanagh Crime Prevention Officer for Laois-Offaly and Kiera Williams Operations Manager at Tullamore Credit Union Ltd.
Maeve impressed the judges with her knowledge of the environmental and climate change issues threatening our planet and a deep awareness of the role and functions of the European Union. However, the judging panel took some time to reach a decision such was the high calibre of the finalists.
As a result of her success Maeve will now enjoy an all-expenses paid trip to Strasbourg, Belfast and Dublin in the coming months with fellow zone winners from all around the island of Ireland.
The President of Tullamore and District Rotary Breda Colgan extended heartfelt congratulations to Maeve on her outstanding achievement and commended all the students who reached the final, as well as everyone who participated in this year’s competition. "The quality of presentations this year was exceptional, and great credit is due to all our finalists and indeed everyone who competed in the earlier rounds. We hope all participants found the experience enjoyable and rewarding. The competition continues to grow stronger each year, thanks in no small part to the invaluable support of teachers and parents. We are sincerely grateful for their encouragement and dedication."
The Rotary Youth Leadership Development Competition is open to 16- and 17-year-olds who are living on the island of Ireland. Tullamore & District Rotary Club will be hosting a local round of the competition in 2025.

Thank you so much to the members of & District Rotary Club for presenting us with the proceeds from their Remembrance Tree which they displayed over 2 days in the Shopping Centre last Christmas.

Thank you to An Garda Síochána Laois Offaly for sharing this video from our recent road safety campaign launch in Scoil Mhuire, Tullamore. Our late President Paddy Dunican was the driving force behind the campaign and in creating the 'Phone Down, Safe Driving' message. Please share this video as much as possible to keep this important message trending. Three more people have lost their lives on Irish roads in the past 24 hours bringing the total number of lives lost to 61 for the year to date.
Please help to promote this crucial message and to honour Paddy's legacy. We are utterly devastated to have lost our President and friend. Thank you all for your messages of support.

Paddy Dunican, our President, colleague and friend -Rest in Peace.
It is with immense sadness we acknowledge the passing of our Club President Paddy Dunican. Paddy was a founding member of the club in 2015 and served as Vice President for a year before beginning his term as President in 2023. A tireless and dedicated volunteer, he especially made his mark with our annual road safety campaign, elevating it to national status.
Above all, Paddy was a cherished friend to all in our club, many of whom spent countless hours in deep conversation with Paddy over a cup of tea over the years, discussing and debating the workings of the world.
Passionate, loyal and generous, his passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. We wish to express our condolences and pass our deepest sympathies to Paddy’s family.
