This is how an Irish native Oak woodland looks in mid-April. Oak trees flush (develop new leaves) later than many other tree species due to their susceptibility to frost damage. Ring-porous trees like oaks have large water-carrying vessels that are vulnerable to freezing temperatures. Flushing later reduces the risk of these vessels being damaged by late frosts

 

The Bluebells are in bloom, but the Oak are still asleep - they don't usually flush until May here                      ...
