The University of Limerick (UL) is taking an important step by piloting the HSE SunSmart Campus initiative. This program aims to enhance the well-being of students and staff by promoting sun safety, education and practices on campus.

In partnership with HSE Mid West, the HSE’s National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) and Healthy Ireland, the University of Limerick is adopting the SunSmart principles to raise awareness about the dangers of UV exposure and promote lifelong habits that reduce the risk of skin cancer—the most common cancer in Ireland.

Most people think they don’t need to take care of their skin when in Ireland but with over 11,000 cases diagnosed annually, skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in this country. Although skin cancer rates are more common overall in older people, a disproportionately higher number of people are diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer (the most dangerous form of skin cancer) under the age of 50 compared to all invasive cancers. The good news is skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. We can reduce our risk of skin cancer by protecting our skin from the sun and other sources of ultraviolet radiation, such as sunbeds. Being SunSmart and never using a sunbed, can help reduce your risk of all types of skin cancer, including melanoma.

A SunSmart Campus pilot aligns with the Healthy UL Framework, which aims to integrate health promotion into the everyday culture of campus life.

HSE Mid West Introduces Electronic Health Records for Maternity, Neonatology, and Gynaecology Services

University Maternity Hospital Limerick (UMHL), HSE Mid West, has become the fifth hospital in Ireland to implement the national Maternal & Newborn Clinical Management System (MN-CMS). UMHL joins Cork University Maternity Hospital, University Hospital Kerry, the Rotunda Hospital, and the National Maternity Hospital in this national initiative.

This is a significant advancement in the delivery of maternity, neonatology, and gynaecology care across the region. The MN-CMS went live at University Maternity Hospital Limerick (UMHL) on Saturday July 5th and, on Monday July 7th, at the Ambulatory Gynaecology Unit at Nenagh Hospital, including menopause and fertility services.

Meet the Team at the Medical Day Hospital and DEXA Service, St. Camillus’ Hospital, Limerick

“We provide diagnostic and bone health services to patients from across the Mid West. Our goal is to support people living with disabilities or long-term health conditions by helping them prevent illness, get the right diagnosis, and maintain their health.” Maria O’Brien, Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (CNM2).

Maria O’Brien shares a look into the work of our dedicated team at the Medical Day Hospital and DEXA Service.
“We care for both inpatients and outpatients from St. Camillus’, St. Ita’s, and community teams in Limerick and Clare. We also receive referrals from hospital consultants and local GPs, carrying out over 10,000 tests every year.
Our services include blood tests (phlebotomy), 24-hour blood pressure and heart monitoring, tilt table testing, DEXA scans (bone density), heart scans (echocardiograms), bone health assessments and treatments, health promotion through “Making Every Contact Count” (MECC) and a medical clinic with Prof. Margaret O’Connor, Consultant Physician and Geriatrician.
Our team includes six nurses: a Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM2), a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in bone health, two DEXA nurses, and two nurses trained in diagnostic testing. We’re also supported by a cardiac physiologist for heart scans, along with three clerical staff.

Right now, we’re focusing on MECC, helping patients take control of their health by connecting them with the right supports. We’re proud to deliver compassionate, high-quality care, supporting patients through diagnosis, treatment, and education.

Looking ahead, we are committed to strengthening our existing services and continuously adapting how we operate to meet the evolving needs of older adults.”
