Here are 5 possible reasons for belly fat (abdominal weight gain) from a functional medicine perspective, which focuses on root causes and whole-body systems rather than symptoms alone:

1. Chronic Stress & Cortisol Imbalance
Why it matters: Chronic stress leads to consistently elevated cortisol (the stress hormone).

Effect: Cortisol promotes fat storage, especially visceral fat around the abdomen.

Functional approach: Address stress through lifestyle (e.g., mindfulness, adaptogens, sleep hygiene).

2. Blood Sugar Imbalance / Insulin Resistance
Why it matters: High sugar or refined carb intake causes spikes in insulin.

Effect: Insulin promotes fat storage, particularly in the belly.

Functional approach: Stabilise blood sugar levels with low-glycemic foods, fibre, and, if needed supplements.

3. Gut Dysbiosis / Inflammation

It has been researched to lose weight; you must be in a caloric deficit (burning more calories than you consume).

BUT…

⚠️ Not All Calories Are Equal in the Body.
The type of calories you eat affects:

Hunger & Satiety: (Protein & fibre keep you fuller than sugar)

Blood Sugar & Insulin: (Refined carbs spike fat storage)

Hormones & Metabolism: (Healthy fats and nutrient-dense foods support fat burning)

Gut Health & Inflammation: (Processed foods can cause water retention & bloating)

💡 Example:

500 kcal from chicken, veggies & avocado will fuel your body, balance hormones & curb cravings.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive disorder that affects the large intestine. It is a chronic condition that causes symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. The exact cause of IBS isn't known, but factors like diet, stress, gut microbiome imbalances, and abnormal gut motility play a role.

Types of IBS
IBS is classified into different types based on the predominant bowel symptoms:

IBS-D (Diarrhea-predominant IBS)
Frequent, loose, or watery stools
Urgent need to use the bathroom
Abdominal pain relieved after bowel movements

IBS-C (Constipation-predominant IBS)
Hard, dry, or lumpy stools
Infrequent bowel movements
Straining during defecation
Bloating and abdominal discomfort

IBS-M (Mixed-type IBS or IBS-A for alternating)
Alternating between diarrhea and constipation

However, the concept of a "detox" often refers to supporting or optimizing these natural processes, especially after periods of overindulgence, such as during the holiday season. Here's a deeper dive into why some people choose to "detox" and how it aligns with what your body is already doing:

Why Detoxing Can Be Beneficial
A detox isn’t about replacing the body's natural processes—it’s about reducing the burden on these systems and promoting overall health. Here’s why people might benefit from mindful detox practices:
