Really interesting video with Dr Hyman and Dr Malhotra. It is true that most GP's first reaction is to prescribe statins. Well if you really wanted to find out what your risk of heart disease is why not ask you doctor to refer you for a CAC scan (Coronary Calcium Scan), this the best predictor of heart disease. Many clinics around Ireland now doing these, they are not cheap but well worth every penny.

Interesting research coming out in MS. Most people that have Epstein Barr virus never see a symptom as it lies dormant. But for a few it can have serious issues.

Blood pressure-lowering effect of Shinrin-yoku (Forest bathing): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

A lovely review on the effect forest bathing has on blood pressure. While I completely accept the need for pharmaceutical interventions, there are other ways that can help with the bigger picture of reducing blood pressure. Forest bathing being a great way at times of increased stress. Another, the DASH Diet being clinical proven to help lower blood pressure.

"Costenbader noted that in a 2013 observational study from France, vitamin D derived through ultraviolet (UV) light exposure was associated with a lower risk for incident Crohn's disease but not ulcerative colitis, and in two analyses of data in 2014 from the Nurses' Health Study, both high plasma levels of 25-OH vitamin D and geographic residence in areas of high UV exposure were associated with a decreased incidence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA)".

The effect was strongest with vitamin D, with significant risk reduction beginning more than 2 years after the start of daily supplementation.

For maintenance, it is widely accepted through scientific literature that 2000iu is what you need. For deficiency doses well in excess of this is needed. Always have your Vitamin D levels checked before dosing higher than 2000iu.

A group of politicians has said that Irish people should take daily Vitamin D supplements due to growing international evidence that it may help to prevent Covid-19 outbreaks.

A nice article on Resting Heart Rate here from the team at Oura. I have been using an Oura ring now for the best part of a year and I find it fantastic to help me understand more on where I need to be. Wellness is not only about nutrition it is so much more than just that. Sleep, exercise and relationships, one needs to look at the whole picture. Taping into your sleep cycle is a very important part of wellness. Ask yourself this, Are you getting enough sleep? How do you feel when you walk up? Did you fall asleep easily? Can you relate your energy levels during the day to the sleep you had the night before?

For Athletes, Are you training at night? If so how do you find getting to sleep? Do you stay up later after you train? How are your training sessions considering your sleep from the night before?

I think it is fair to stop and think about your sleep and if you find yourself having some negative answers to some of the questions above then its time to take some corrective action and improve your sleep.

Attention Type 2 Diabetes sufferers. Did you know that Metformin depletes your Vitamin B12. Why not check your medication from the list and if you are taking any of these that are widely available here in Ireland maybe its time to consider taking a supplement with a decent quantity of B12 in it. You can see how important B12 is in the body.
