A friend recently found the “dream house” he had been seeking for a couple of years. It ticked every box – location, size, garden space, price. All those viewings over many months had finally paid off and this was the ultimate reward. A week later he discovered that someone had put in a higher offer, could move in immediately, and the deal was closed. How did he feel? Frustrated, disappointed, angry, distraught? He experienced all of these emotions but, at the same time, realised that they were simply part of a story which he had created in his head. Would his life really have been better if he had secured the house and made the move? What had actually happened since putting in the offer and hearing about the outcome? He had started to imagine a series of events which would take place as a result of his actions. He had, in effect, started a new story. And the thing about stories is that they can be told in many different ways – as a tragedy, as a comedy or as a call to arms. How are you telling your story?
