MLD is a specialised therapy aimed at improving the function of the lymph system. MLD was first developed in the 1930’s by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife in Europe. The lymph system is a vital component of the body’s immune system and a major route for the absorption of nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract. MLD stimulates the lymph vessels by using a slow rhythmic, gentle skin techniques which allows for increase contractions of the lymph system. It intensifies the removal of metabolic waste, excess fluid and substances from the tissues, which are then re-dispersed in the body or expelled. A Little About me

After completing my nursing studies in Hertfordshire University in the UK, I worked as a staff nurse on an oncology ward in Mt. Returned to Ireland in 2002 and worked as a staff nurse in Wexford General Hospital from 2003 to 2007. In 2007 I started nursing in the Oncology Day Unit of the hospital. Completed my Graduate Diploma in Oncology Nursing in May 2009, Masters in Clinical Practice August 2011 and Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice in May 2012 in UCD. In the course of my work in the oncology unit I have encountered patients who have lymphoedema post breast surgery and this sparked an interest in lymphoedema and its management. So in 2014, I trained as a Manual Lymph Drainage Therapist (Dr Vodder Method, Level III). I am also a member of MLD Ireland.

Our Story

She had been diagnosed with breast cancer and been through the mill starting with surgery, then more surgery to remove her lymph nodes, chemotherapy and radiation. She had got through some of the treatment with easy while other aspects were tougher but here she was a survivor. On the right side of the journey.

And then it happened....LYMPHOEDEMA. That thing she thinks they mentioned a long time back in her journey a distant memory from a dark place. Something that might or might not happen.

How did it happen? That she was unsure of, but here it was a heavy arm with an unusual sensation, her sleeve was tighter on that side, her rings weren’t as loose and then there was the swelling what was that about? She explained how she spoke with her oncologist and he diagnosed secondary lymphoedema, the permanent reminder that she had been through breast cancer, the thing that would never go away, it was here to stay. Then came another battle finding a manual lymph drainage (MLD) therapist who could help her manage this lifelong condition that had decided to settle in her life. Eventually she located one but she sowed the seed, the seed of MLD. And so began the road to Wellbeing Techniques.

My background was in oncology nursing and I had studied up to Master and Advanced Nurse Practice level, still I wanted more. So I took myself off to Cork to train as a MLD therapist. We learnt the Dr Vodder technique but it was more than just a treatment, they instilled their knowledge and passion that goes hand in hand with this treatment. Knowledge about our lymphatic system, how it works and how we can support it. I thought MLD was a treatment that could only be used for lymphoedema , however as my practice is expanding I have helped many clients with either their wellbeing or treated their health issues using MLD. It is a treatment that continues to amaze me, clients feel the benefit after one session, the difference you can get from using the treatment and compression bandages for lymphoedema clients has to be seen to be believed. It is amazing and so gentle not at all like it name suggests.
