Travel the world Tuesday!🌏

Today we travel to Bangalore, India.

Established in 1963, St. John's Medical College is part of St John's National Academy of Health Sciences. It's prime mission is to serve the medically unreached.

MSIH students have been doing clinical rotations at St. John's Medical College for over 15 years. There, they are exposed to a large variety of traditional, as well as tropical medical conditions. They gain insights into treating underserved people in a society with limited resources.

Travel the world Tuesday!🌏

This Tuesday, we travel to Katmandu, Nepal.

Patan Academy of Health Sciences is a public non-for-profit tertiary academic institution dedicated to improving Nepal’s rural health by training health workers for rural Nepal. The goal of PAHS is that its graduates will not only provide severely needed medical care in rural Nepal, but will also eventually become leaders in health care policy, dedicated to improving the health of the remote and destitute populations in Nepal.

PAHS is located in the city of Patan, which is adjacent to the capital city of Kathmandu. PAHS is based at Patan Hospital, which is the major teaching hospital for the academy.

MSIH students have been doing clinical rotations at PAHS, alongside Nepalese medical school students, since 2001.

MSIH has a growing community of 650+ alumni who practice medicine in the U.S., Israel, and abroad. More than 50% of our alumni continue to practice global health work following residency, whether locally or internationally.

The MSIH Alumni Association provides alumni with a network to pursue their social and professional goals, remain connected to MSIH and current students through alumni events and programming, while providing the opportunity to give back professionally and philanthropically to the University.

We would like to thank Past President, Dr. Leslie Gonsette, as well as welcome the new MSIH Alumni Association President, Dr. Zevidah Vickery.

Travel the world Tuesday!🌏

Today, we are highlighting Vellore, India.

The CMC Vellore (Christian Medical College and Hospital) is located in India. It is one of three clerkship sites in India where MSIH students partake in clinical rotations. In this rural setting, MSIH students learn how to promote community health and provide primary medical care with limited resources. The site focuses on health concerns such as community-based rehabilitation, nutritional deficiencies, AIDS prevention, and life expectancy indicators.

MSIH fourth-year students have been doing clinical rotations at Christian Medical College for two decades.

Ever wonder what it is like to be a first year medical student at MSIH?

In his most recent blog, MSIH rising second year student Jordan Winberg shares his top ten memories of the first year of medical school.

Believe it or not, studying with friends made the list. Jordan writes, "Being part of a small class sharing the same schedule meant that whenever I had a deadline or exam approaching, so did all of my classmates... School felt more like a team sport as we collaborated, planning our strategies, comparing approaches, discussing tricky problems, and meeting to work together and practice for exams."

Today, we are highlighting Gondar, Ethiopia!

The University of Gondar - Gondar College of Medicine & Health Sciences in the oldest medical school in Ethiopia. The teaching hospital houses 400 beds, a maternal and child care hospital, TB ward and laboratory, eye hospital and Fistula center. It also serves as a general hospital for other services. Through outreach services, about 50,000 households are reached annually.

MSIH and the University of Gondar have been working together since 2001. Not only do a cohort of MSIH students travel to Ethiopia for their eight-week global health clerkships, but a small cohort of medical students from Ethiopia come to Israel as well.

Ekram Abdu Seid, a 6th year medical student from Ethiopia who came to MSIH, said, "Visiting MSIH has been a life-changing experience for both of us (that year he was there with another student from Ethiopia). We'll go back to Ethiopia with a whole new perspective and a renewed sense of purpose. We now know there are so many improvements that can be made and although we're only students, in the future, we're determined to influence how medicine is taught and practiced at home."

Beginning this Tuesday, let's travel the world! 🌏

Every Tuesday, we will highlight one of our worldwide global health clerkship sites. In January, all fourth year MSIH students embark on an eight-week global health clerkship which is the culmination of our M.D. program.

MSIH students put their years of medical studies to use in a resource-scarce, real-world setting. They are immersed in a challenging clinical setting dealing with diseases, illnesses, pathologies and conditions they may have never before experienced. They learn how physicians and medical practitioners in different cultures promote health and quality care despite limited resources. These students are integrated into the training programs of local medical students, helping them to gain knowledge and experience.

Past destinations have included India, Ethiopia, Nepal, Ghana, the Philippines, Mexico, Peru, and Sri Lanka, as well as remote, resource scarce locations in the United States, Israel and Canada.

MSIH students come from all different backgrounds and may ask themselves, "how did I get here?" Rising second year student, Jordan Winberg, explores that very question as he reflects on his journey to medical school and his first year at MSIH.

Jordan writes, "...a blurry idea of some desert city where I could learn medicine has become a home away from home, a place of friends and community. The city where I study medicine alongside a supportive group of peers. When I look around the city I see familiar places, green gardens, and modern buildings. What was once a bleak image in my mind has been fully coloured in by my experiences here this past year. Even my concept of what being a doctor means has shifted significantly."
