💉🧠 The link between Type 2 Diabetes and Mental Health:
Type 2 diabetes increases the risk of developing schizophrenia later in life by 50%.
A new study, led by our very own Prof. Stephen Levine, together with Prof. Arad Kodesh from the Department of Community Mental Health and Meuhedet Health Services, and Prof. Abraham Reichenberg from the Department of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York , examined whether being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in midlife raises the likelihood of schizophrenia in later years.
Published in Schizophrenia Bulletin, the study found that people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are at a 50% higher risk of developing schizophrenia compared to those without diabetes.
The findings are based on a 15-year follow-up of tens of thousands of Israelis 🇮🇱 and reveal a surprising link between a common metabolic disorder and one of the most severe psychiatric illnesses.
