This May, we wrapped up 𝐓𝟐𝐌𝐄𝐃 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, the annual medical entrepreneurship hackathon of the Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion – and what an experience it was!

T2MED brings together 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟔𝟎 of the brightest students 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟏𝟎 different Technion faculties — including medicine, engineering, and the sciences — to tackle unmet clinical needs and reimagine the future of healthcare.

The journey began with an immersive Orientation Day at Carmel Medical Center. We heard an inspirational opening from 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐘𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐫-𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐢. Learnt from 𝐃𝐫. 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐲 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐤 on Need-Based Innovation using the Biodesign Method. Students joined round tables with mentors to explore clinical pain points and brainstorm early ideas.

From May 14–16, work continued at the Faculty of Medicine. Supported by mentors in medicine, tech, law, design, and business, students researched, prototyped, and pitched real solutions.
Hard not to mention some standout moments from the hackathon:
• A fascinating talk on “Medical Ethics and AI” by 𝐃𝐫. 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐢-𝐏𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨, sparking big questions about tech in healthcare
• A calming yoga break at 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨 𝐁𝐚𝐭-𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐦 to recharge body and mind
• A dynamic pitch workshop with 𝐘𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐳𝐦𝐚𝐧 (𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐨), packed with tips to present like a pro

16.05 marked the 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭, featuring the Semi-Finals and Grand Finals – where teams pitched their ideas to a panel of judges, the most influential representatives in their fields, including:
𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐀𝐦𝐢 𝐀𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐦, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐀𝐯𝐢 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐠, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐛𝐛𝐨𝐮, 𝐘𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐳𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐯, 𝐍𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐡, 𝐑𝐨𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐑𝐮𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐢𝐧, 𝐘𝐚𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐯 𝐃𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐤𝐲, 𝐇𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐟

And now, the winners:

I HACK, THEREFORE I AM.
Last week we had the pleasure of celebrating our very own T2MED’s 10th anniversary, the main entrepreneurship conference of the Technion’s Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine.
T2MED 2023 began with an orientation day at Carmel Medical Center. After opening remarks from the Medical Center’s Director, Dr. Avi Goldberg, we had an ideation session with Dr. Lior Lev-Tov, then split into teams and consulted with mentors on developing the ideas for the hackathon.
The main event took place on the weekend, 22-24.03, at the Medicine Faculty. We had over 80 students from over 10 faculties across the Technion, alongside students from the Engineering Management Master's Program at Johns Hopkins University. These intensive 3 days included finalizing the idea, carrying out market research, going through a lot of trial and errors mixed with extensive coding and prototyping , all with the help of our mentors – an amazing group of individuals – coming from the fields of medicine, technology, entrepreneurship, business development, law and more.
The Final event was conducted on Friday where we had our Semi-Final and Grand Final, in which the teams pitched their projects to a panel of top-tier judges. The panel included Dr. Ayelet Akselrod-Ballin, Dr. Binyamin Abbou, Prof. Ami Aronheim, Dr. Lital Attia, Mr. Danny Farin, Prof. Lior Gepstein, Dr. Avi Goldberg, Ms. Yaarit Lotan, Ms. Tali Rosenwaks, Prof. Eliezer Shalev, Mr. Amit Turman, Prof. Zahava Vadasz, Prof. Salman Zarka and Dr. Lilach Zoller.
After a long and complicated discussion within the panel, the winning teams were announced:
1st Place – VIBEease
The Project: A device that reduces TMJ disorders.
The team members are Zohar Shnaider (Biomedical Engineering), Roni Kohn (Biomedical Engineering), Amit Nahmias (Biomedical Engineering), Rotem Lahat (Medicine) and Noam Sherf (Mechanical Engineering).
2nd Place – FaceSpeak
The Project: A Software for face muscle tracking and practice.
The team members are Yochay Tzur (Medicine and Computer Science), Fedor Lipskerov (Medicine), Rana Jbara (Medicine), Mais Ali Hamdan (Medicine), Hanusha Durisety (JHU’s Engineering Management Program).
3rd Place – SOONer
The Project: An AI voice-recognition based app for long-term screening, enabling early and objective detection of neurological diseases.
The team members are Dror Tapiero (Energy Engineering), Wisal Khalaily (Chemical Engineering), Mordechay Buzaglo (Mechanical Engineering) and Roi Wayner (Medicine).
The teams won prestigious award, but also the opportunity to join BizTEC, the Technion’s Entrepreneurship Program (that comes with financial support to kickstart the projects).
For the 10th anniversary, a Crowd Favorite Award (courtesy of Tempo – טמפו) was also awarded, in memory of Dr. Yoav Medan that passed away unexpectedly last year. Dr. Medan was a special person as well as a friend and took part in the T2MED events in previous years as a mentor, in which he had an impact that cannot be explained in words.
The winning team of this award was LactoGuard, presenting a novel, non-invasive way to monitor fetal delivery, capable of real-time measurement of stress and hypoxia. The team members are Sam Cogan (Biochemical Engineering), Nada Saffouri (Medicine), Itamar Salton (Medicine), Noa Kopelman (Biomedical Engineering) and Roy Dvorkin (Biochemical Engineering).
Once again, we would like to express our gratitude to the Faculty of Medicine, as well as to all of our Sponsors, that helped our vision come true. Lastly, we would also like to thank the organizing team for working day and night to make this year’s T2MED happen – Meitar Yavneh, Leehe Savitzky, Idan Peled, Hadas Berebbi and Alon Hacohen.
Can’t wait to see you all next year!
