Weekly Wednesday Wellness tip #7:

Do you suffer from tension headaches?

Tension headaches are caused by the contraction of muscles that cover your skull. The pain runs from one ear to the other and around the front of your head. It's often caused by stress and lack of sleep.

Here are two alternatives to popping an over-the-counter pain reliever:

1) Apply peppermint oil to your hairline. It will create a cooling sensation that relaxes the muscles in your head and neck.

2) Crush up an inch of ginger root and add it to boiling water. This homemade tea reduces inflammation in about the same amount of time it would take an aspirin to work.

Weekly Wednesday Wellness tip #6:

Do you feel drained? Feeling like you need a boost of energy?

Try checking your vitamin B12 levels. Insufficient B12 levels can lead to deep fatigue, mood changes, and dementia-like qualities which prevent you from feeling your best and performing at your highest energy level. Vitamin B12 is naturally found in some foods (animal foods like fish, poultry, beef, and dairy products are the most reliable sources), it is added to others (like fortified breakfast cereal) and available as a dietary supplement. A blood test will reveal if you are getting sufficient amounts and if not, it is easy to make necessary dietary changes that will boost your energy.

Weekly Wednesday Wellness tip #5:

Eating late at night often causes insomnia and/or weight gain.

According to the 'Chinese Clock', digestion is the strongest in the morning, between 7-9am (the hours of the stomach) and between 9-11am, (the hours of the spleen). This means that twelve hours later, at 7pm-11pm, digestion is the weakest!

Eating after 7pm can cause gas, bloating, indigestion and possibly be the cause of insomnia or weight gain. Try not to eat past 7pm to fall sleep more easily and keep weight in check!

Feeling a little bothered by the heat?
Dietary advice for relief from hot weather includes consuming cooling foods such as cucumber, celery, broccoli, watermelon, cantaloupe, pears, apples, lentils and mushrooms. Its also helpful to avoid overeating.

Weekly Wednesday Wellness tip:

Do you suffer from painful periods?
There is a secret point that can be helpful in eliminating painful cramps from periods when you apply pressure to it. Modern research has proven that this acupoint not only reduces menstrual cramps, but even helps balance underlying hormones that may be causing painful periods and PMS. The point, located on the Spleen meridian, can be found on the inside of the lower leg approximately four fingers' width above the ankle bone. You'll know you found the right point because it will feel tender when you press it. Hold or massage the point until your menstrual cramp diminishes.
**note: this point is also used to induce labor. Do not press this point if you are pregnant.
