Tu B’Shevat: A New Way to Think About Eating 🌳

Tu B’Shevat is often called the “New Year for the Trees,” but at its heart, it’s really about renewal beneath the surface.

At this time of year, trees don’t look particularly impressive.
They’re bare. Quiet. Still.

And yet — deep inside — something is shifting.
Sap begins to rise. Growth is already underway, even if we can’t see it yet.

This month in the Jewish calendar is traditionally connected to eating — not in terms of rules or restriction, but in how we eat and how we relate to food.

What if eating wasn’t about “good” or “bad” foods?
What if it wasn’t about control, guilt, or getting it “right”?

What if it was about:
• Listening instead of judging
• Nourishing instead of fighting
• Eating in partnership with your body — not against it

Tu B’Shevat invites us to slow down, taste, notice, and reconnect — to food, to ourselves, and to the wisdom our bodies already hold.

Gentle growth counts.
Quiet change matters.
And honoring your body — just as it is — is already enough 🌱

After 25+ years as a clinical dietitian, I know this to be true:

Letting go of dieting rules without support can feel scary — especially in midlife.

Choosing partnership with your body isn’t about “doing whatever you want.” It’s about learning how to listen, respond, and understand what your body needs now. And that process often works best with guidance.

I’ve written a new blog about why professional support makes such a difference when healing your relationship with food — and why you don’t have to navigate this alone.

If you’ve ever felt stuck between wanting freedom from dieting and fearing what happens without rules, this will speak to you.

My word for 2026 is Partnership.

Not partnership with another programme, plan, or set of rules —
but partnership with your own body.

After 25+ years as a clinical dietician, I’ve seen this pattern over and over again:
women who feel “out of control” around food aren’t lacking discipline — they’ve lost trust in themselves.

Diet culture teaches us to fight our bodies.
To control, restrict, and override signals like hunger, cravings, and fatigue.

But what if the problem isn’t your willpower…
What if it’s the relationship?

I’ve just written a blog about choosing partnership over dieting — especially in midlife — and how working with your body can lead to calmer eating, less guilt, and more sustainable change.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in the cycle of being “good,” falling off track, and starting again — this may resonate.

25+ years of clinical work has shown me this:

When women stop fighting their bodies, results finally stick.

I’ve watched so many smart, capable women blame themselves when things stop working the way they used to.

They eat “better.”
They try harder.
They push through exhaustion.
They follow more rules.

And yet…
their energy drops,
their weight shifts,
their sleep suffers,
and their confidence slowly erodes.

What I’ve learned — both professionally and personally — is that midlife isn’t the time to wage war on your body.

It’s the time to listen more closely.

Your body isn’t broken.
It’s adapting.

And when you stop forcing it to behave like it did at 30, and start working with what it needs now — that’s when change becomes sustainable.

Less punishment.
More partnership.
Smaller, realistic steps.
A lot more compassion.

If this resonates and you’re curious about how I support women through this phase in a grounded, science-based way, you’re very welcome to reach out and ask about my work. 🤍

Chanukah food can hold a lot of drama.

Latkes.
Doughnuts.
Oil.

And this year, it’s all happening alongside very real grief and shock after the horrific events at Bondi Beach — a reminder of the painful duality so many of us are holding right now.

Joy and sorrow.
Light and darkness.
Celebration and heartbreak — at the same time.

For many of my clients, this can add to the challenge of still showing up to nourish their bodies while wanting to enjoy this special time with their family and friends.

If you are feeling stuck in this, here’s something important to hold onto-

Enjoying Chanukah food does not cancel out the balanced habits you’re building in the background.

Eating regular meals, staying hydrated, including protein, vegetables, and carbs — all of that still matters, even when latkes and doughnuts are part of the picture.

You don’t need to give up caring for your body in order to enjoy the holiday.

And you don’t need to avoid holiday food to stay steady.

Both can exist at once — just like everything else we’re holding right now.

Have the latke.
Enjoy the doughnut.
Eat your normal meals.
Sit down.
Eat slowly.

When your foundations are in place, your body is far more resilient than you’ve been led to believe - and one latke or doughnut is not going to undo all the great choices you are making.

This Chanukah, test out how it feels to reduce the all-or-nothing thinking that is keeping you stuck from progressing to reach your weight and wellness goals.

That’s not “letting go.”
That’s building the consistency that actually leads to change.

You’ve heard the hype about GLP-1 medications—Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro.
But what’s really going on beneath the surface?

As a clinical dietitian, I’ve worked with many women who are using these medications - and here’s what I want you to know:

âś… They can support real, life-changing results
❌ But they’re not a magic fix
âś… You still need proper nutrition, mindset work, and long-term planning

In my latest blog, I dive into when GLP-1s are warranted, how they work, and how I help clients use them safely, mindfully, and effectively.

👉 Tap the link https://www.justinefriedman.com/blogs/glp-1-medications-a-powerful-tool---but-not-the-whole-picture to read the full post.

💬 Let me know—have you considered or used one of these medications? What was your experience?

Yesterday I watched the unleashed movie. It had a profound impact on me.

One of the many things I wrote down from what he shared was how important it is to focus on progress.

Yes it's important to have goals.
But we become who we are on the journey to that goal.

One of my main mantras with my clients is to focus on progress and not perfection and I felt so validated hearing this from him.

He said measuring progress is what brings happiness.

So my message today is to suggest that you set aside disappointment on not yet reaching goals you may want to achieve and rather take time to acknowledge the steps you are taking along the way.

If you would like guidance and support in implementing tools that will help you to make positive lifestyle changes then I would be honored to be the person to work with you.

I see you.....

The woman with her face in her hands, her brain analysing and planning.

It's the post-chag show-down where you feel bad for how you lost control with food and what you ate.

It's the calculations on how to eat less and exercise harder to lose the extra weight that is now sitting on top of the weight you already didn't love.

Can I stop you right there!!!

First of all, you are not alone.

That post-yom tov slump is so normal—and it doesn’t mean you’ve failed or need to punish yourself by “eating less” to make up for it.

Instead, take a deep breath.

Come back to the basics: nourishing meals, staying hydrated, moving your body, and offering yourself some kindness. Small, consistent steps are what really make the difference.

Many of my clients who had already built these habits went into Pesach feeling calm and in control—and they’re now easing back into routine without the guilt or overwhelm.

You can feel that way too.

Head to my latest blog to learn gentle, doable ways to reset your body and mind with care.

https://www.justinefriedman.com/blogs/reclaiming-balance-after-pesach-a-gentle-reset-for-your-body-and-mind

P.S. If you had an awesome Chag and were proud of the food choices you made and the habits you implemented, please share them in the comments!
