May 25th is Global Surgery Day, highlighting the inequity in surgical access and outcomes for patients worldwide. Access to healthcare is defined as the timely use of personal health services to achieve the best health outcomes. Yet, it is estimated that over 5 billion people in the world lack basic access to safe surgical care, leading to 17 million preventable deaths every year. The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery reported that 4.2 million people worldwide die within 30 days of surgery yearly. The occurrence reminds us that access to surgery is a fundamental human right that is not yet a reality for all.
