Earlier this week, while reading the upcoming Parsha, Noah, my 7 year old commented that the rain lasted 40 days, just like 40 days Moshe was on mount Sinai! Why was that? What do both events have in common? I promised him I would find out. And it occurred to me that Slihot also takes place for 40 days. The Torah in its infinite wisdom is telling us that change takes time! If you want to erase a whole generations evil ways, if you want to prepare yourself to accept differnt ways of life, it's a process! It doesn't happen overnight, like an instantaneous miracle, it requires time to get rid of old habits and take on new, healthier ones.
In psychology literature I read that it takes at least a month to adapt behavior, and the average time it takes to change behavior was 66 days (I was hoping to find the number 40, but 66 is pretty close). Shabbat shalom!

I am in the midst of packing for the past few weeks. On the one hand, it's exhausting, and sad, and hard to get rid of so many things. But on the other hand, there is something very freeing about getting rid of the clutter. On an emotional level, it's a chance to take inventory of our thoughts/beliefs and ask ourselves: Is this still serving me? Is it practical/helpful? Does it have emotional value? If not, just like items in the house, they clutter, so we toss them, give them away, send them out to the world. If it's not helping you then it's most likely taking up mental/emotional space that could be used for other things, just like physical space. It's hard to make a change. But it's not impossible! I'm doing it...

ונהפוך הוא -
On Purim, we are supposed to do the opposite. Ve NaHafochu - the story of the Jewish people changed from sorry to joy.

In this week, leading up to Purim, I invite you to think of a negative thought pattern that you have (perhaps something keeping you back, or something that you've been wishing to work on and change about yourself). The first step is to identify that thought pattern, and then change it into something else, more positive. For example, the negative thought "I can't do this" can turn into "I'm trying my best". "Things aren't working my way" can become "things are happening exactly as they should be".

Try it for a week, and let me know in the comments what thought pattern you're working on changing, or how it went. 😎
Happy Purim!
