For all you newbies in Israel out there, occasionally we will post a bit of useful Hebrew intro lessons, to get you started. Let`s try with the first lesson. If you are Interested in more of these, please drop us a comment :)

Introduction to Hebrew for English Speakers

Welcome to your first lesson in Hebrew! The Hebrew language, spoken primarily in Israel, has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. Let's dive in!

The Hebrew Alphabet (Aleph Bet):

Hebrew is written from right to left. There are 22 letters, all of which are consonants. The vowels are indicated by a system of dots and dashes (called "nikkud") that are placed around the letters. For beginners, texts often include these nikkud, but many modern Hebrew texts do not, so it's essential to learn the words' pronunciation.

Some fundamental letters to start with:

ื (Aleph)
ื‘ (Bet)
ื’ (Gimel)
ื“ (Daled)
ื” (Hey)

Basic Vocabulary:

Shalom (ืฉืœื•ื) - Hello, Goodbye, Peace
Todah (ืชื•ื“ื”) - Thank you
Ken (ื›ืŸ) - Yes
Lo (ืœื) - No
Mayim (ืžื™ื) - Water

Basic Grammar:

Gender: Hebrew nouns have gender - they're either masculine or feminine. Adjectives and verbs need to agree with the noun in gender and number.

Verb Tenses: There are three main tenses: past, present, and future.
Definite Article: In Hebrew, the definite article is "ha-" (ื”). For example, "sefer" (ืกืคืจ) is "a book," but "hasefer" (ื”ืกืคืจ) is "the book."

Pronunciation Tips:

Resh (ืจ): This letter is rolled at the back of the throat, similar to the French 'r.'
Chet (ื—) and Kaf (ื›): Both are pronounced from the back of the throat, like the "ch" in Johann Bach.

Greetings and Polite Phrases:

Boker Tov (ื‘ื•ืงืจ ื˜ื•ื‘) - Good Morning
Erev Tov (ืขืจื‘ ื˜ื•ื‘) - Good Evening
Laila Tov (ืœื™ืœื” ื˜ื•ื‘) - Good Night
Slicha (ืกืœื™ื—ื”) - Excuse me / Sorry

Practice!
Start with simple phrases and daily vocabulary. Label objects in your home with their Hebrew names, listen to Hebrew songs, or watch Israeli shows with English subtitles.

For a bit more, Check out this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKPKtvrXEfM

Remember, like any language, consistency is key! The more you practice, the more comfortable you'll become. Enjoy your Hebrew learning journey, and Shalom!
